Trek Prequel Comic -SPOILERS- (official COUNTDOWN review thread)

True to a point, but if the "Data" in the comics is B-4...a different android subjected to harsher environmental conditions on Kolarus III and beforehand when he was still disassembled parts...you can always excuse Spiner's appearance as B-4/"New Data."

But you're making the assumption that people who will go see this movie have already seen Nemesis, and would get the B4 reference. Which they wouldn't, because they didn't. They'd be scratching their heads, saying "who the hell is B4?"

It's STAR TREK. By definition some of the references will be aimed at the geeks and longtime fans. It's never stopped the films before. Even the super-successful ones like FIRST CONTACT had references to things like Voyager's EMH that most people even then were likely not terribly familiar with. And the Bozeman with Kelsey Grammer's voice as Captain Bateson in the Borg battle? Only a minority of TREK fans even noticed that at the time. Some stuff is just eye and ear candy for the most devoted fans, with the rest aimed at the larger audience.

I think it's highly doubtful that Brent Spiner is going to be either Data or B4 in the new movie, but there are special effects techniques these days that could map a younger looking Spiner's face onto his body like what they did in the last X-Men movie. So the age barrier isn't necessarily precluding the possibility.

^Too bad that they didn't employ some deaging effects to Frakes and Sirtus in TATV.

True. The least they could have done was make Sirtis' wig match her hair in "The Pegasus." After all, this is supposed to be Troi DURING the events of that older episode, and during Season 7 of TNG her hair had one distinctive style...which was NOT replicated in "TATV." Sheer laziness.

^ Such things were merely the ripe and swollen pimples that festooned the hairy, sweaty flabby arse that was TATV.

:D

I personally can't think of a better phrase to describe TATV than "Sheer laziness" (on you-know-who's part)... Well except maybe for "A bad joke," that would sound about right too IMO

And while Frakes' appearance in *the thing that is TATV* certainly is ridiculous, Sirtis actually looked pretty good for her age (boob job and all ;))

True. Sirtis looked bangable. I'd have hit it.

But it also makes it look like she contracted yellow fever for several hours during the Pegasus mission and lost about twenty pounds.

Finally got my copy and read it, in about 1 minute 45 seconds. My god, that was short!

Still, Trek lives! Fantastic to catch up with Spock and Data again.

Story wise; eh, it's a beginning.

I'm still thinking it's B-4 after seven years of assimilating the original Data's old programming and memories...and thus "becoming" Data in the 2379-2386 interregnum. Otherwise, it creates an alternate/new timeline WITHIN a changed timeline. Idiotic.

Or, to use real world, non-canonista explanations, either TPTB are ignoring NEM outright (*as we all should), or that this is following the idea that the new movie is establishing a new universe and everything that happened from NEM going all the way back to The Cage is the old universe.

In any case, deal with it.

So, the next day they leave but when they arrive, they are being attacked and boarded by Remans. Just as all seems hopeless, another ship warps in and starts firing at the Remans: The USS Enterprise NCC-1701-E under Captain Data.

Yep you heard it here first, Data lives and commands the Enterprise.
What? Now they need to a make a prequeal for that and what happened to Picard?

I was just now over at startrekonline.com and i was reading some of the great work they are doing with the backstory from Nemesis until the time the game is set.
In their latest update I read this:

http://www.startrekonline.com/timeline/2384
And Starfleet decides to transfer the Soong-type android B-4 to the custody of the Soong Foundation. The prototype android was deactivated after its discovery by the Enterprise-E in 2379, but foundation representatives say they hope to restore his full positronic functioning.
So since, as far as we can tell by the uniforms, there is some form of continuity between the game and the comic, could it be that the Data in Countdown is actually B-4 fixed by the Soong Foundation and with Data's memory and personality restored ?

I could see this happening.

And a B-4 with Data's knowledge and memories would for all practical purposes BE the "new Data." Like a clone or transporter duplicate that retains the original's knowledge and personality.

I hope it's true.

1. I like Data and want him back.

2. Unless the producers or whoever has the power to, says the comic is canon then there's allot of people not going to accept Data's return. Them seeing him onscreen would save much arguing the point.

the only problem I have with the comic Data being B-4, is would he assume Data's rank? if they are treating him as the 'same' entity, fair enough, but surely he's a different being and should have to start from the bottom, therefore Captain is an unreasonable rank in the timeframe.

saying all that, if he has all Data's experiences, maybe they could make an exception, albeit on some sort of probationary period.

It will be quite amusing if the comics never actually resolve this, leaving us all to speculate.

It's not that complicated.

Remember all the many times a Captains ability to stay in command depended on his or her taking a brain scan and having it compared to a scan taken when the Captain was known to be normal... If it matched then said Captains command continued.

Same for B4, if a scan taken today was shown to exactly match a Data baseline scan from before he was destroyed then he is Data.

But wouldn't B-4's initial brain scan after NEM just show that he's obsessed with Irving Berlin tunes?
