What Would William Ware Theiss Design?
"The degree to which a costume is considered sexy is directly proportional to how accident-prone it appears to be". -- William Ware Theiss.--

In a couple of months, I'm planning on hosting a Star Trek marathon for a gathering of friends. This has been inspired by my recent hike through the TOS DVD boxed set. No theme is ever needed per se for these events, but it can make the time even more fun. So the theme for this marathon is going to be "Bill Theiss - Costuming Master", and we're going to show episodes that highlight the most "fascinating" of his creations. Think Carolyn Polamas and Droxine. And more.

I am limiting it to 10 episodes to be shown. What would you say are the most memorable of Theiss' costume designs for Star Trek?

I guess "Elaan of Troyius" as well, even though I find that costume hideous.

    Without a doubt, that's a keeper.

She wore three rather distinctive costumes in that episode. Are you thinking of any one in particular?

Don't forget Shahna in Gamesters of Triskelion. For me, it's a toss-up between hers or Droxine's constume as Theiss' most outrageous design.

Then there is always the Khan Collection, now available at fine stores everywhere.

I've always been partial to Deela's outfit with the open sides.

    Rather like that one, myself.

That Grecian gown they put on Leslie Parrish takes the crown (especially since, supposedly, that thing was held in place by gravity, i.e., the weight of the part draped over her shoulder was enough to keep the girls covered up to keep Standards & Practices content, and the fact that Ms. Parrish had something rare in Hollywood, a naturally perfect body). The rest are just runners-up.

Ditto. I just watched that one Saturday! :techman:

And the Dolman in "Elaan of Troyus" wore an outfit with a similar feature, towadds the end of that episode.

    Memorable outfits on TOS?

    Nancy Kovak's outfit certainly qualifies.

Yeah, the orange faux fur is ugly but the tight black leather pants make up for it. ;)

I like the "sexy savage" look......................

Nancy Kovak was one of those actresses who was scintillating no matter what she wore.

I've always been fond of this little number, emphasis on little, worn by Zarabeth. I don't think of Mariette Hartley as James Garner's TV wife when I see this picture.

Supposedly, this babe's costume was supposed to show her navel.

    NBC nixed that. *sigh*

Andrea in "Little Girls" has THE best Theiss costume in the entire series. Lt. Palamas's revealing gown in "Adonais" would be my #2 pick. That thing revealed a lot for 1967! It's a wonder the NBC censors didn't ask the producers to redo the dress.

You know.... it just occurred to me that Nona's outfit actually did reveal her navel, proven in the pics above. As did Uhura's and and Marlena's in "Mirror, Mirror". What was it that made NBC allow such reveals in those cases yet not for Zarabeth and Lt. Palamas and Jeannie for that matter?
