andPOP's review of the "screener footage"...decidedly mixed

I hope it isn't as convoluted and dark as BSG. (A show which I and about 20 other souls are sticking out) BSG at it's height had a niche appeal.

I can name more than twenty of my own friends that are die-hard BSG fans, but I can understand your badly made point.

This seems a reasonable reaction to the footage he saw -- he just seemed underwhelmed and noticed flaws. I suspect he won't be alone. A lot of the moviegoing public and critics will likely react to this film as same product in a different package, with the biggest cheerleaders being fans that Abrams thinks are less the audience for this movie than the "general" moviegoer.

His comments about Star Wars pretty much put into question his other comments...

Abrams has his downsides as a producer and director, but on the bright side of things at least Brannon Braga isn't helming this thing. We might never get another STAR TREK movie again.

I meant the reviewer.
I don't know much about Abrams except that I like the style he used for Mission Impossible III

ALIAS was also visually engaging and well-paced. I think more of his TV work than his movies.

If I didn't make the point, my bad--proportionately to the budget for the film. I thought someone above said something about a low budget movie making a profit versus a high budget film not doing so.

If Serenity cost 40 mill and made 40 mill (domestic), then it wasn't a huge failure.
.

actually by hollywood standards that would be considered a failure. a film needs to make double it's production cost's before it's considered profitable.breaking even is still a loss to the studio exec's.

So this reviewer is faulting the Trek movie, which he hasn’t seen, for not measuring up to a bunch of TV episodes he hasn’t seen. OK then….

Let me just sum everything up for everyone here.

:D :D :D

...or, in the alternative...

Actually, my first reaction was "What's andPOP?"

I don't think I'd ever heard of them before this, despite the fact that they seem to have been around for a number of years. That their movie reviewer is only now getting around to posting a reaction to footage the more mainstream entertainment press saw back in November (or only now being invited to see the footage by Paramount) seems to speak to his place in the Hollywood food chain, and to mitigate somewhat my ignorance of the existence of andPOP or him until now.

Put me down for "Eh." His opinion matters just about as much as mine does.

His opinion doesn't really mean anything to me. I'll go see it and if I don't like it-life goes on. I prefer the original series and I've had my series and original films and that's all that matters to me. The end of an era has passed and I am pleased with what and how much I got. I won't judge this film by TOS because its not TOS.

If Trek cost 150 mill and makes 80 mill (domestic), then it WILL have been a huge failure.

Hopefully that clarifies what I was (unsuccessfully) trying to say.

I think Trek will easily eclipse 150 mil. I doubt the review of some critic on a site few have ever heard of (at least I've never heard of andPOP) will sway opinions on not seeing it.

btw, if Trek XI's budget was 150 million, does anyone know if thats what actually was spent, or did they go under/over? I was curious about that while reading this thread

Regarding the budget, I think TrekMovie clarified the final budget to be closer to $130 Million.

^^ It would probably be closer to $150M with advertising, anyway.
I think I read they finished more or less on budget.

I hope marketing is more than just $20 Million!

How much does marketing for a major motion picture costs?

It depends per movie, but here is an article on Film Budgets.

http://www.gcglaw.com/resources/filmmaking101/filmbudget.html

This line may be of interest, bottom of the second paragraph.

Neither the prints used to show the film theatrically nor the advertising and promotional budget are included in the budget numbers used for production. For studio films, prints and advertising often equals the costs of the film production and, for an inexpensive film, may greatly exceed that cost.

I don't know but I have seen it said that Nemesis had the greatest marketing budget of all the Treks. I would be interested in where all that money or "marketing" went however. I'm sure the owners of Paco's Taco's or whatever the heck it was called, serving 3 Locations in the Southern California area, got a huge kickback with their Nemesis tie-in.

Having read the 'review' it is clear he wont like the movie by default because he does not like Kurtzman/Orci scripts. So I am not concerned by this non-review in the least.
