New Enterprise Toy Revealed

This is odd...those rumors that there are two different versions of the Enterprise in the film might be true. Here's another view of a Playmates Enterprise:

(Click for larger.)

I think I actually like the first version better!

There's a whole gallery of new Trek stuff here.

Interesting...the markings on this ship look more "correct" as far as matching the original 1701, but the picture at USAToday looks more accurate to what we see in the trailer/reveal photo. I actually like the one you posted better, with more TOS-style markings.

It looks like the nacelles are melting!

^^It's not just the markings; the pylons, the deflector and the fronts of the nacelles are different too.

You're right. The deflector isn't a glowing blue (which a sliver of can be seen in the first toy pic), the bussards look red, the markings...

Curiouser and curiouser...

The more I look at it, the more the version we've seen already in the promo pics looks like the refit; it even has more refit-style markings on the secondary hull:

Interesting....

It's possible, due to the timeline weirdness, that the Enterprise has her major refit before Kirk takes command.

Not likely, the ship already appears in "refit" state when it's being built on Earth...unless instead of just being built on the ground, ships are brought to the surface for refitting as well...

I cannot express how much I like those playsets and the Enterprise, and how much I hate those figures.

Agreed. I'm gunna put LEGO dudes on the Bridge, I don't care if they too small or not! :D

Btw the second image looks like crap, too much like the old Enterprise.
The first image looks very clean and true to the actual movie ship.

The new ship has gone from 'oh brother' to 'meh' for me. Which is an improvement.

However, the new communicator....I truly hope there's not a freakin' UFP logo on the inside of the antenna grid. It looks absolutely retarded.

"Who do I represent again?" (looks at inside of communicator) "Oh yeah, the UFP."

It's dumb.

The phaser's proportions are a little ungainly. If everything's meant to look more streamlined/whatever compared to Classic Trek...why's the phaser look more clunky?

The bridge should have a seizure warning on it.

But still, seeing the toy Enterprise makes me feel a bit better.

Dialogue between me and my dad 2 minutes ago:

"Hey check out the toy ship for the new Trek..."

Dad "Oh it's just the 1701? No bloody A, B, C or D?"

"Nope, this is actually before TOS."

Dad "Ah, it looks cool."

:D

That bridge "playset" is anything BUT. It's a flat plastic matt with some stand up pieces on it. And you have to keep buying action figures to get all the standing pieces.

A friend of mine pointed out that with the economy the way it is, it's not a good idea to make people spend that kind of money just to get a "stripped down" starter set they have to spend MORE money to build up.

The transporter standing pieces look ok, but again, it's a flat plastic matt with a standing peice...with no screenies of the Transporter Room to compare it with, there's no way to judge it.

The action figures look pretty good all around.

The prop replicas are a mixed lot. The Tricorder looks intriguing. The communicator is "meh" (hate the little viewscreen). The phaser is complete garbage. It looks like it belongs in an old Republic Saturday matinee serial. Our own Starship Polaris did a MUCH better "updated TOS phaser" some years ago.

The Enterprise looks well done (if you care for the design) but WTF were they thinking when they designed that Romulan ship?!?

Overall impression:

Execution: 5/5 stars

Designs: mixed..average 2.5/5 stars

Well, in the prime timeline ;), its generally assumed that the Enterprise recieved a refit after Pine's original mission (after The Cage) - explaining away the differences in bridge, nacelle caps and deflector dish.

Its been mentioned in the past in the Encylopedia etc - so, maybe due to the jiggery pokery in the timeline she gets a more updated refit. If these pics are true I have a hunch that the ship will start out lookin more TOS and get refitted to look a little more TMP (the first pic - which looks more awesome the more I look at it).

My two cents.

I've said this before and I'll say it again ...

The nacelles are too bulky to be so close together. It makes the ship look too 'hunched up'. They need to wider apart, like the original Enterprise.

There's nothing wrong with updating the Enterprise. Any of us who are professional designers (myself included) or even casual artists know that most design is about updating something that already exists but the original proportions of the Enterprise worked well and should have been left alone.

On the side view the nacelles appear to be droopy because of the accentuated curves.

Overall, I think they look as thought they were taken from a different ship as they don't fit in with the rest of it!

Interesting....

I'd also say this angle makes it look like the Enterprise just got punched in the nose, or is smelling some sort of cheese it doesn't like.

I've a feeling more adults will be buying these toys for themselves rather than for their kids :D

I know I will

This looks like it may have been an earlier internal prototype toy. Sometimes test pictures get released inadvertently.

There's even two versions of the new Communicator pictured out on the internet.
