I just noticed a funny signature that I hadn't noticed before.

It had me wondering how long it had actually been there. You see, I normally don't bother reading the signatures, I find them disrupting to the flow of normal conversation in a thread -but not enough to actually switch them off though.

How about you?

On a scale from 0 -meaning that you have them switched off, to 10 -meaning that you read them so often that you know most of them by heart and could identify almost any poster by their sig.

10. Why? Because everytime I read someones post I read their sig.

It's a bit of self expression that is nice to take a look at to get a little bit
of an idea about that person and possibly where they are coming from in
their post based off who they are, what kind of slogan they like or what
kind of statement they choose to make.

Avatars and Sigs are great, useful tools for following a conversation.
Much like taking a look at someones car or the team logo on their baseball cap.
Usually helps you have an idea of who that person is and what they're all about.

Disruptive to the flow of convo? Not even close.
Insightful and sometimes just plain entertaining.

I have signatures turned off. The few that are brilliant tend to get outweighed by those that are monotonous, dumb, or offensive. They tend to disrupt the flow of conversation for me, so I'd rather not have to look at them.

I still maintain a signature, but it's mostly so that people won't be forever skipping the last line of my post.

I tend to identify posters by sigs over usernames on occasion. Which can really screw me up if someone changes it, or their avatar.

I always notice - tend to click some links depending on my mood.

For my own sigs, I gave up a little. I tend to put something like "90% of the time it works every time." but fell into shameless self promotion, which is odd as I don't have anything interesting or serious to say.

I usually read them if they catch my eye . . . sometimes I tune them out if there are a lot of them on the page and I'm more interested in the discussion

I'll go with a 5. On occassion, I will read sigs just because I can, but for the most part, I don't even look at that part of the post unless something really catches my eye... for example, the " :D " at the end of RoJoHen's sig always catches my eye, so I read it every single time for some odd reason.

I put 7 -- I don't make a point of reading every one and I don't always remember which sig belongs with which poster, but I still do keep an eye open for good ones, whether they're informative, funny or whatever.
Same here. I have always liked kitkat's ADD/chicken sig.

Someone once started a Misc thread based on one of my sigs. That's seems so long ago now. It was back when Enterprise was in its third season, I think.

^ I think the latter is inevitiable no matter the outcome, you're a bbser, it's in our nature.

I like to read them if for no other reason that the fact that they are often funny.

But I also like the additional insight a sig often gives into the poster's personality.
