Star Trek: Countdown #1 early review - MASSIVE SPOILERS!

Cool, thanks. Oh, and no problem, I wasn't mad, I just wanted to point out my thread.

Having Data back would be awesome - as long as it's Data and not B4.

In mind or body?? Data's body was blown to smithereens at the end of Nem.

So... Picard finally must have taken that admiral's position. Or maybe he bit the dust. I hope that is explained as well.

I have to say, I love the idea of Data as captain. LaForge as CO and Spot as security chief.

Data as Captain of the Enterprise seems weird to me considering the events of Destiny and I thought that maybe Worf was on a fast track to commanding the Enterprise-E. I was thinking of getting Countdown in TPB when it's released in April...this explains why Data is on the teaser poster for the books now.

"Official" prequel or not, I'll bet a million non-existent federation credits that the actual movie contains ZERO mention of "Captain Data", meaning there's nothing in canon about it, meaning none or our beloved authors or editors are beholden to any of it.

I would absolutely like to see Data back. However, short of him dying between now (2381) and Countdown (2387), Worf SHOULD be the Captain by then.

For that matter, where's Picard off to (hopefully not the admiralty, lest he be killed to be spared possible future irrelevancy)? These are all individuals with broad skillsets; they can be doing any number of things other than captaining starships or rotting in the ground.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Anyone know if IDW are allow to tell more comics in this time frame? I'd be interested in seeing a series with Captain Data. :techman:

Of course, right now all this means to me is that the entire movie is an alternate reality and not just the Nero-affected portions. ;)

Like I said, if the folks at CBS Licensing to tell Pocket to acknowledge Countdown, then we will. It's as simple as that. If they don't tell us that, we might choose to anyway, but we wouldn't be compelled to...

...That may well be true. And I think that if we do choose to make the book continuity consistent with Countdown, it will be because of the story possibilities, not because of any compulsion based on past precedents.

Just out of curiosity why do you keep referring to yourself as Pocket?

I have to admit that I groaned upon hearing that Data is back from the dead. I might not be picking this one up.

Presumably because he's a novelist who has written books for Pocket.

I think it made more sense that Worf remain captain of the Defiant.

That DS9 finale was some weird shit. It was cool, though.

No, I think it's a fair question. I'm also trying to figure out when Christopher became the Official Press Secretary for Pocket Books. I admit that maybe I'm reading Christopher wrong, but that's how he's coming across to me, that what he's saying about the movie and its spinoffs sounds like official policy from the Pocket offices.

^^Sorry, didn't mean to give that impression. I think I've been making a point of saying "I think" and "Maybe" and "I believe" and the like. I've never intentionally suggested that I'm expressing anything more than my personal conjectures.

When I wrote "if the folks at CBS Licensing to tell Pocket to acknowledge Countdown, then we will," what I meant was "if they tell Pocket that the novels should acknowledge it, then we, the novelists working for Pocket, will do so." I guess I went for brevity at the expense of clarity. But it's not a statement of policy, merely of what I know from experience: that the books conform to the decisions of the licensor.

For that matter, where's Picard off to (hopefully not the admiralty, lest he be killed to be spared possible future irrelevancy)?

After retiring from Starfleet--

1. Becoming an ambassador?

2. Taking over the Atlantis Project?

3. Traveling the galaxy as an archaelogist and--how does one say it?--obtainer of rare antiquities?

Well both the covers obscure the rank pips - now traditionally, Admirals have a bar rather than pips but it could be that they will show Picard with five pips. In the same way, that Data uses the Uhura pose ensuring that we wouldn't see his fourth pip...
