Hollywood Video here closed up a lot of stores and reorganized. Blockbuster and Netflix hurt them pretty badly.

Oh yeah Bennigans is hurting as well.

Then what replaces these deceased businesses?

New business with effective business models.

We've had a pretty unprecedented period of growth and a lot of existing companies have rumbled on with shocking models, simply because of a benign macro climate. Now they've been found out, and are going under.

New business models, such as NetFlix. I want to know how many people bemoan the closing of the local Hollywood or Blockbuster yet have an active NetFlix account. My money is that by the end of the decade, the only businesses renting movies will be small kiosks and gas stations.

I remember when Blockbuster was The Leader, and I am smiling maniacally at its demise. I hate Blockbuster with a passion because of their past fucked up business practices.

This is healthy, because it clears out the canopy & undergrowth a bit, allowing new companies, with more effective models to compete more effectively and grow when the inevitable upturn finally arrives in a couple of years.

Recessions are healthy & necessary, in the medium-term and beyond, though that is not to discount the short-term pain.

Yep. All of you 20-somethings need to quit listening to the news media and stop panicking. Recessions aren't fun, but they're necessary. This one hurts in different ways, but it's not like anything people haven't endured before. The best part of every Recession is the economic growth that follows. Maybe some of you who borrow, use credit cards, and/or have little savings will use this as a learning experience, because you're going to live through two or three more in your life.

In my mall in Des Moines Iowa my KB toy store closed in 2002

Then three years later Suncoast and Sam Goody

Then 6 months ago Walden books.

Gamestop moved to a different area of the mall

The Waldenbooks in our mall is closing in March. And I'm in a college town where people actually read books. Of course, there are two Books A Million and two Borders stores in town. Albertsons was bought out by Publix, and a lot of their stores are closing and/or being converted to Publix stores.

KB is closing all of it's stores. Can't say I'm really surprised. The KB in the Berkshire Mall in Lanesboro Ma. closed a couple of years ago. KB's headquarters was only a few miles away in Pittsfield. If it couldn't survie, none could.

Another store that is closing, or has closed is Steve & Berry's. That store didn't last long. It was only opened in the Berlshire mall for less then a year.

Charter's stock is only selling for $.10 a share. Though I wouldn't pay $.10 for a million shares of that f---ing company. They are the worse cable company around.

They say they are ready for the switch to digital cable. Thats a load of BS. My local CBS affiliate WRGB has done some tests these past weeks. If we are ready for the switch we wouldn't see any interruption of service, if we aren't we will see static. Well we saw static. The amazing thing is, we have a digital reciever.

I think Borders will be one of the next retail chains to go under. They haven't been able to compete with B&N, let alone the online sites like Amazon.com. It'll be unfortunate since I think their stores have more variety and are laid out better than B&N. They're trying to turn things around but I do not think that will be possible, considering they were looking for a buyer last year.

I wouldn't mind if Charter went under. They refuse to upgrade their system in my parents' town and so they continue to lose customers to Dish and DirecTV because of it.

I actually didn't have any problems with Charter. They were better than what I have now, Comcast. I despise Comcast. I wish so badly that we could get satellite.

First off Walden Books was bought out, it didn't close.

Secondly, Barnes and Noble is having issues but Borders is also having some similar issues as well.

Third, the draft house went corporate. Don't want to talk about that.

As was said earlier many of these stores were in trouble or years. To tell the truth I wonder if its just a normal cycle. its seems that in my area we have been saturated by "a store on every corner" syndrome for the last 15+ years. I used to always scoff at the fact there would be three pharmacies on adjacent corners. That was excessive. It was just a matter of time when many of these places were going to go belly up. Im surprised it took this long for some of them. There are just to many stores and not enough people to actually shop them.

Correct. I believe this happened about two years ago, but Waldenbooks, about the only store I used to care to visit in the malls, has now become Borders Express in some areas. When Borders became prolific, I started going there more often. On a side note, Borders now also has its own on-line store similar to Amazon.com.
