Tardis making money from Islamic Oppression

The "Islamic oppression" claim in the thread title is misleading and incorrect. Dubai is not an Islamic theocracy. It is an emirate, a constitutional monarchy ruled by a dynastic Arab monarch. That's a secular governmental system. And while Dubai is known for various human rights violations, religious oppression is not one of them. Islam is the official state religion, but according to the US State Department, there are "no reports of societal abuses or discrimination based on religious belief or practice" in Dubai or the UAE. The problems that have been reported in Dubai have to do with racial and sexual-orientation discrimination, oppressive treatment of workers and migrant laborers, and irresponsible environmental policies. This isn't a religious issue, it's a government-corruption issue. It's got nothing to do with Islam. It's prejudiced and ignorant to assume that everyone in the Mideast is a religious fanatic. Aside from Iran, pretty much every nation in the Mideast is governed by secular rulers, and it's their corruption, greed, and oppression that have created the poverty and social injustice that have driven so many of their subjects to religious extremism in the hopes that it would provide an alternative.

Maybe the Doctor could explain that the black rock in mecca was from aliens and not allah, that could go over well.

The Doctor in Dubai that rings a bell

*goes up stairs*

*comes down stairs*

the Doctor has already been to Dubai, well the Persian Gulf to be exact, 2099, Snow Globes 6 & 7, where if I recall correctly the earth is now home to a group of aliens called the "Flisk" as well as humans.

Thanks Christopher, I was going to say the same. This sloppy labelling and denigration of Islam must stop. If it's a human rights issue, the OP's suggestion that they film it in the USA doesn't hold much water. "I don't mind if the government executes children, just as long as it's not under Sharia law." And Patagonia? This is the BBC. Dubai will offer significant incentives to film there - it's all part of the "Dubai brand". Argentina isn't exactly the least corrupt place in the word either.

Incidentally, isn't Patagonia the only place outside Wales where Welsh is used? Maybe it would be a suitable home away from home for Who after all.

The "making money" bit of the thread title is wong too, since the BBC is a non-profit organisation.

And did anyone complain when Michael Palin went there recently> And for that matter Holby City filmed an episode there too.

Dubai is not the nicest place on Earth no matter what it's Tourist Board might try to make people believe but Doctor Who not shooting there for four days won't change a damn thing.

This is by no way an attack on DrWho, it is a criticism of BBC management to have to arrogance to outsource to a place were people are exploited and treated like dirt.

But it has a King who more or less makes law whenever he opens his mouth and what he says IS THE LAW. You have a whole under class of serfs building their nation and any broad range of activities they take part in can lead to jail time. A Kiwi was given a lengthy jail term recently and a good hard dose of Islamic re-education for having a nano-gram of cannabis in his shoe. In child custody battles the UAE applies Sharia law, journalists are threatened and prevented from reporting the truth and Harry Potter books were banned according to them for promoting witchcraft

No doubt there are probably some worse places in the world than Dubai, poorer countries with worse human rights records. However just because Dubai less the lesser of two evils and offers tax breaks does not mean we should outsource there and benefit from the broken backs of serfs.

quote:
"The BBC, in its infinite wisdom, has decided to film... in Dubai. That's the Dubai that isn't a democracy. Dubai with its dubious human rights record, appalling treatment of migrant workers and flagrant disregard for the environment. Dubai, where you can be arrested for being gay and jailed for up to 10 years. To that list, you can now add - because you can be sure the emirate's tourist board will - Dubai: location for BBC1 hit drama Doctor Who. Come! Bring your children!"

He has a point. Doctor Who, in its 21st century incarnation, is the product of Russell T. Davies, the man who gave us Queer As Folk. Doctor Who, the gayest science fiction drama series in history (despite, or perhaps because of, its historic unsexiness), oughtn't be party to Islamic fundamentalism (ha! Doctor Who and Islamic fundamentalism in the same sentence - that's jokes, blud).

I'm ashamed to say I wasn't aware of the extent of the human rights/environmental abuses in the UAE, although I had a rough idea and none of what I've learned is surprising. But it is appalling. As McClean argues, "There is no justification for filming in Dubai...

and finally it looks like this little savings adventure might cost them money

Only last week he revealed the show revolved around the Doctor taking a “bus trip which takes an unexpected detour into danger”.
To ship the bus to Dubai would have cost the BBC around £7,000. And production in the Middle East state is costing an estimated £30,000 a week.

Hey stop bashing BBC Wales

Seriously, UAE is pretty progressive compared to say Syria or Iran. In fact Doctor Who should film in Dubai because a). There is a reform movement in the UAE b). more Western contact is a good thing since that means more exchange of idea. Honestly should Doctor Who not film in the US because we exploit people from Latin America.

And if you really feel that strongly about it, why are you wasting your time posting to an internet message board about it?

Write your MP or ring up the BBC or Offcom and make an official complaint.
