NFL Discussion - 2008-09 Playoffs

Well, who else has done it besides Warner?

Hm, maybe I was wrong, the commentator on the tv channel I watched the game on mentioned Earl Morrall and Jeff Rutledge, but after reading their wikipedia pages I'm not sure if they really were starters or just backups in some of the Super Bowls they played in.

Congrats to the Cards. I really wanted them to win this one. I've always been a sucker for chronic underdogs and I always liked the Warner-led Rams, so seeing the Cardinals take it was sweet. The eventual winners didn't take it quite easily in the second half, though... there were times I was whispering surprisingly violent things to my TV.

Which, come to think of it, may say more about me than the Cardinals.

Earl Morrell started for the 1968 Colts and for the Dolphins undefeated team. Rutledge, as far as I recall, never started a Super Bowl.

Great comeback effort from the Eagles. They're quite fortunate, though, that Warner doesn't hit a wide-open Boldin at 24-6, or the Little Birdies stomp them as badly as they did the Cards Thanksgiving Night.

The better team won, though ... and they put a stake through this version of the Eagles, who will age quite a bit over the offseason and be no real threat next year.

I don't have any time to sit and post, but I wanted to pop in here and congratulate the Cards and you, JM. Damn fine game, although I was sort of rooting for the Eagles (McNabb really). This way thought I get to root for one of my all-time favorite players in Warner.

Again, superb game!!!

I thought Bob Griese started for Miami in that Super Bowl, not Morrall??

I wonder what those so-called "experts" who want a revamped playoff system so teams like the Chargers and Cardinals don't get in and teams like the Patriots do have to say now.

Well, if the Cardinals hadn't clinched their division so early, they probably would have won a few more games. They were playing for nothing in the final weeks of the season. So they probably would have done better than 9-7 if 9-7 hadn't already been enough to guarantee them a home playoff game.

Quite right: They're 10-6 or even 11-5 if their last five games mean anything.

Actually, 8-8 would have done that. They made a mild effort against Seattle to finish up the regular season because we don't want any of the division rivals thinking they actually have a chance next year—which, of course, they don't. :techman:

You're both right. Morrall did start for the Colts in 1968. He also started in lieu of Griese for most of the 1972 season. However, Griese did start the Super Bowl itself

Oh my god, that was a terrible hit right there that caused the fumble! I hope Clark and McGahee are ok. Jesus Tap-Dancing Christ, they both got blown away right there....

Otherwise, it's been a very entertaining, hard-hitting game.

Indeed. There are hits that you laugh about and comment how hard the hit came in, and then there are hits that you see happen and know that at least one player won't be getting very quickly. That is probably one of the worst hits, if not the worst hit, that I've seen all season.

I was amazed at Polamalu busting out better return moves than most actual receivers, and then that hit between McGahee and Clark--holy crap that was brutal.

Clearly no bad intent from either player, but that's the kind of stuff that leads to paralysis. Hopefully they're both okay, especially McGahee who got the worse of it.

What a game by the Cardinals!

Great to see Warner going back to the Big Game.

Pittsburgh wins, but what an ugly game. Flacco had no clue.

I wish the assholes running the stadium would have shut the fucking music off. McGahee easily could have been lying dead, while the stands are blaring with CCR...

:wtf:

At least he was conscious and moving when he was carted off.

Oh yes, and GO STEEEEEELERS!

I don't know the first thing about running a facility like that, but keeping the music running was probably a good decision. It wasn't a matter of a lack of compassion or respect. Think about it. The music helps to keep the crowd a bit more distracted maybe even a bit more relaxed. They can't do anything for the injured player, so the music makes the time pass more smoothly for them. Those who do want to pray for the unjured player castill do so.

THe game though....... one word: OUCH!!! Hard hits but they were clean hits. To be honest, if Baltimore hadn't had to play another game, they might not have been sucking wind late in that game. Flacco... looked like the rookie he is out there, but I still think he seemed to take it in stride. The future is only going to get brighter for him
