The tragic remains of Probert's Space Office Complex (Graphic)

Of course, it must be noted that the truss-tube Dobsonian reflector telescope(?!) and observatory dome were added to the SOC miniature by ILM's model department for ST:TWOK. They were neither blueprinted by Probert not built by Magicam for ST:TMP.

*sigh*

Thus, children starve in Africa.

Won't ILM think of the children?

They'd still be starving, Leibniz,

I'm more of a Newton fan, myself.

whether Harve Bennett and ILM ruined the SOC miniature or not.

I dunno. I thought it was cool that Bennett and company resurrected the station for Star Trek II, and that DS9 used it, too. We got to see it a lot more than if it had been locked away.

It's just too bad that one some subsequent uses no one's flipped it back rightside up and reassembled it back to it's original form.

Yeah. Seems like it would be fairly easy to restore; when I first saw TGT's thread title, I figured it was rotting and had holes in it or something, a la the Galileo shuttle left out in a field. But it's perfectly well maintained, if modified well beyond original specs. It's not unrecoverable.

But then, I don't think this is a tragedy anyway. I'm always fascinated by how TV and film make reuse of old material. I'm more intrigued by the changes it's gone through as a historical process than anything.

Nothing matches the horror of 2001's space station core, found rotting in a field in the 70s. Especially since a highrez cap of said station -- in its glory -- is my background as I type this. That was a work of art.

The drex site has some great pics, I'll give it that.

Far better that the Space Station 5 miniature rot in a field than turn up (as Kubrick feared) in some scuzzy low-budget studio sequel, which is pretty much what happened to the SOC.

I remember hearing about that. The full-sized mockup for the Planet of the Apes ship in "Escape From The Planet Of The Apes" suffered a similar fate.

Well, that was certainly a treat. I've always loved that station in its TMP form. It served well enough in its TWOK role, despite the 180 switch, but I hated the total out scaling of it for DS9. The best thing about this article (besides new details) is seeing it in actual studio scale. The first image with the human hand... (Drexler's?) Wow, I had no idea how huge that model must have been in all its glory. I've been modeling that one in 3D and these newly revealed details will come in very handy! :D

Yeah, TNG fucked up the scale of this particular station (probably the best in all of Trek so far) too .

Do you have any images of you mesh? I'd really like to see it. :)

No, I just think that particular comment was a bit out of line. ;) The sarcasm wasn't really necessary.

Looks good, the model seems to have held up well. It's never been my favorite design though.
