I would like to buy a vowel?

can I have an A?

last purchase was an A.

go figure?

Well I did my part for the economy this weekend:

1) Got hair done
2) Groceries
3) Rented snowshoes
4) Bought ski pass
5) Bought face moristurizer
6) Had a massage

A new pair of sneakers that actually don't hurt my feet. They're ugly as hell, but I can wear them to the gym and not think about how much my feet hurt.

I just bought a storage bin for all of our Christmas wrapping paper. I could have bought it earlier but I knew it would probably go on sale, which it did. I also bought some new placemats and one of those big Yankee Candles (greenhouse). :bolian:

I have been waiting and waiting to buy a particular Barbour International jacket, and I finally got it.

InternationalJacket.jpg

It's a motorcycle jacket, of waxed cotton, and the design has been made by Barbour since the 1930's. A style apparently favoured by the motorcycle mad Lawrence of Arabia.

^ Nice jacket.

Barbours are pretty cool; I keep thinking about getting a Beaufort but then keep getting distracted by something else.

Remember you'll have to occasionally (probably once every few years or so) rewax the jacket to maintain its waterproofing. You can just give it to Barbour to do it if you don't fancy experimenting with doing it yourself (though this costs a bit I think).

Thanks, Mr Holdfast. Yeah, I've been told I can ruin it by making an attempt myself, as apparently Barbour use their own unique wax, so I'll definitely go with that. Plus, it comes with it's own guarantee - first piece of clothing I've owned with a guarantee! I would usually expect that of a fridge distributor or something similar... Great service, actually. I enjoyed parting with my cash on this occasion. Which I cannot say the same of purchasing fridges!

I considered getting the underlining vest (what with the recent unbearable weather we've had), but it doesn't look very good with the ladies model, which is more tailored and nipped here and there. Never mind. I think it looks much better without the bulk anyway.

As to getting one yourself, go ahead, I recommend the International wholeheartedly - reason being, you are not in your dotage yet, and there is a difference between classic and darn right elderly. By International young, I mean 30's and there about. The rest, as far as I've observed, appears to be worn by the retired, who come into town in their 20 year old Land Rovers, splattered with mud, with three rain-soaked barking hunting dogs in the back. A bit eccentric, elderly, and ill-fitting with the city, certainly an old money image, but rather a naff one! And not very suited to someone as young as yourself! You'll have plenty of time for those later.

Now all I need is the motorcycle. :D Both my mum and SO would kill me though!

A couple of guys on the clothes forums I read have rewaxed their jackets themselves - you can buy the wax from Barbour, and then you need a hairdryer or a sunny day, and a great deal of patience. Though yes, you can seriously eff it up too! Giving it to Barbour is the best option, I agree!

I don't really know the Barbour range well but I'll take a look.

I keep veering between getting a Roadster or Icer from Loro Piana or a Barbour of some description. The Loro Piana offerings are cooler, but way pricier, so instead I get stuck in limbo and buy neither.

The other stereotypical look is the Barbour-over-suit outfit. Not a fan of that either. Much prefer a snazzy proper topcoat or trench (I picked up a fab, very stylish Aquascutum trenchcoat fairly recently).

I must admit a sneaking sense of envy when I see bikers weaving past me in traffic jams. But then I remember my evil glee when they're out in the rain and I'm warm & dry in the car, and all is well again in my world.

Happy wearing of the jacket! What are you planning on wearing with it?

My latest:

- a 244-CD sleeve from Case Logic

- The Derailers' CD, Under The Influence Of Buck (a collection of Buck Owens covers).

Holdfast, being a biking jacket, it is obviously for casual outdoorsy use, and doesn't lend itself extremely well to a very feminine outfit.

I've only just bought it, and didn't really think about WHAT I'd match with it yet - yes, I'm one of those shoppers! I only knew that I loved it and had to have it. For comfort, I think I might go with brown Benetton taglia classic chinos, and deep brown casual Camper shoes... and weather permitting, a cream longsleave soft cotton Replay top, with only one very small brown suede breast pocket, and about four small buttons at the neck to open as you wish.

If I cared a little less about comfort, it cries out for boots, and I might go with black legging type trousers, under brown knee length boots (which I bought in Italy a few years ago, and have worn very little as they have a heel, and make me about 5'11"!), and a form-fitting little black top. Jazzed up with accessories.

When I do actually wear it, god knows what I'll wear with it, right now it's hanging in my wardrobe, being admired and no more...
No doubt, in the end, it will more often than not be dressed urban casual with standard Diesel or Gas jeans, and Polo t-shirts or SuperDry, and my favourite all now all-purpose comfy brown Firetrap motorcycle ankle boots.

If you were me, what would you do with it?

I can now understand why you simply post your outfits instead of talking about them, it saves a lot of fuss! I might post a few of the combinations, sunlight permitting. Home energy saving bulbs are horrendous, I try never to take pictures indoors in the evening if I can help it!

The simple default option (maybe using a regular shirt instead of the T, depending on mood) that you posted above is exactly what springs instantly to mind.

But I think it would also work as an interesting contrast to other outfits too - perhaps a country twist with a solid cream cable knit jumper, pale green cashmere scarf, and slim tan chinos (or even dark-grey checked trousers), brown leather gloves & lace-up ankle boots. Plus a floppy, wide-brimmed felt hat!

Or dark brown plaid trousers, cream cashmere long-sleeve crewneck and brown heels & glvoes.

Or even (maybe) with black high heels, mottled grey flannel trousers, nice belt, a white or blue tailored shirt top and possibly even a very trim grey single-breasted waistcoat. This one would be much more of a risk than the other options, but might just work I think.

Whether these looks work will depend on exactly where the trousers and the jacket both finish I think. Get the balance between the two right, and they would work together and harmonise. Get it wrong and the jacket will look out of place.

I'm getting a nice fat paycheck next week and am going clothes shopping...suggestions?

I'll update my wardrobe for winter/spring...I'm thinking might go crazy and buy a skirt

I agree with everything you said. Except the shirt part, I have a few particular florals and and things from Full Circle, I thought the high neck of the button shirt might prove a little incongruous, as the jacket is also a high neck, might look a little busy there, not to mention I have a sensitive neck and it might get a little constricting after a long day.

The waistcoat sounds the most out there and interesting, there's one or two in the wardrobe, I'll try them and report back if I liked it. Thanks for the idea!

I also thought of belts on or off, would they go with the jacket, which already has a high waist belt itself?

re: waistcoat

I think everything would have to be fairly close-fitting, but it might just work. Definitely "out there" though, I agree... but experimenting with different looks is fun, after all!

I also thought of belts on or off, would they go with the jacket, which already has a high waist belt itself?

That's exactly part of what I meant about "where the jacket/trousers finish". If the jacket finishes above the waistband of the trousers, it will look weird; if the trousers have a higher rise, then you should get away with it.

Anyway, will think more tomorrow, with a fresher mind! :D

I think the fellows at the new Thai restaurant down the street think I'm nuts. I just ordered one appetizer of edamame and 3 Thai iced teas. Their food is only mediocre, and I'd already made my own dinner, but their Thai iced tea is orgasmic and I just needed lots. I ordered two without ice so they can sit in the fridge for me to drink tomorrow.
