Fifth Season Bland?

the same thing that resulted in troi getting a uniform a season later, and crusher in command, etc etc. that sort of stuff really annoyed me,

Troi getting the blue uniform was the best thing that ever happened to her in the series.

...and suddenly we're supposed to take her seriously as an officer? i don't think so. the blue uniform, to me, was an 11th-hour rewrite of the character. if it had been done in season 1, it might not bug me so much. as it is, it smells like cousin oliver to me. give me "haven" over "face of the enemy" any old day of the week.

The Fifth season used to be my favorite, but it's turned into a mixed bag. I mean it seemed like it was the year of the children with episodes like New Ground, half of Disaster, Imaginary Friend, and Hero Worship. How many times did we need to see the ships school for heaven sake. However, some of my favorite, and underrated episodes came from this season like Darmok (Favorite) and Ensign Ro (Underrated) not to mention The Inner Light, which was TNG's most emotional episode.

I think season 5 is a bit of a hit and miss season. Bland would be one way to describe it. However, there are some episodes that are my favourites. I really enjpy Disaster. Everyone knows I'm fond of The Game. Violations is a favoruite of mine, as is Powerplay. I love Powerplay. I think it's an immensley underrated episode, actually. In fact, I used to wish that they'd combined the themes of Powerplay and Disaster into a two-parter. They would have made ever more kick-ass episodes, in my opinion. Cause and Effect and Connundrum are also another couple of my favourites. So, a lot of episodes I don't like interspaced with a few episodes that are my overall favoruites. A bit like season 7, actually!

Disagree. What you call rewriting the character I call character development. Troi simply broadened her focus, although the only thing I didn't like was her getting a promotion to full commander -- would've liked it better if it both she and Data took that test and she failed while he succeeded, so he could be upped to full commander, frankly. -- RR

While some of season 5 is a bit on the blander side. It has several episodes that are credited with making me a trekkie.

The first episode I saw on live broadcast TV was in summer reruns, "Imaginary Friend" i was 6 at the time and thus the "kid-appeal" worked as bait. i already knew of the series (I'd caught the back half of "The Bonding" on an old videotape a year or so back) and that LeVar Burton was in the series (what PBS-addicted kid in the last two decades doesn't know who he is?), so the follow-up "The Next Phase" was the hook, line and sinker. "Inner Light" was over my head for years and years, but I was hooked from that moment on.
