Conspicuous Absence of Trek XI in 2009 Film Preview Article

Today's Herald Sun lists the major films of 2009. Apparently the "cheesy old sci-fi franchise will never be the same". :\

What else is new? That's exactly what I expect jaded journalists forced to review the film would say. And hopefully they'll be correct.

I have also lived in the UK and in Australia, and I have noticed very different social attitudes to Trek. In the UK, it seems to be more acceptable and mainstream to be a Trek fan. In Oz, its either laughed at or outright derided as loserish.

When Chris Pine and Zach Quinto presented at the Golden Globes just now (I'm watching it right now) , I was expecting a round of hearty applause. Or a standing ovation. But...nothing really. No huge reaction. Is that what ST is in the public eye is these days?

I'm worried about how successful this film will be.

As I said before, not in my experience. I'm 50 - and have lived in Sydney all my life. I'm a teacher and school librarian. I meet and chat with people of all ages and walks of life every day. ST and its fans are no more derided than any number of other hobbies. People make just as much, or more, fun of footie fans who paint their faces, men who walk tiny dogs in public, large women who wear inappropriately tight clothing, Star Wars fans, goths, emos, or English tourists wearing socks with sandals.

I have a friend who emigrated to Australia from the UK and she used to run ST conventions in London. No difference. Another ST friend immigrated to UK. No difference.

Aussies have a reputation for ragging on anyone different to them as "losers". Don't take it personally. They won't laugh any louder at ST fans than SW fans. They send up everyone, even themselves. Just watch any of our sketch comedy series...

Ditto, some things will never change, eh ?

Well, hopefully the new film will put that to rest once and for all.
