I'm not so sure about that, RJD. A close family member could easily tell if a dog or cat is behaving differently to how it usually behaves (yes, it's a fairly non-new sci-fi cliché) so the alien could be exposed that way. Unless the alien disguised itself as a goldfish...

True, but it would still be far easier to pass as a pet than as human member of the family. The alien could also hedge its bets by showing up at the house appearing to be injured from a fight or something to distract attention and explain any difference in behavioral nuances.

My initial thought is a young child. Probably younger the better, but not so young as to be helpless, so they can walk around, eavesdrop and so on. There's also an extra emotional impact when the truth is found out.

Which in a way reminds me of Scottish mythology in which fairies or elves would spirit away a young child and replace it with one of their own that looks like the original. If you can find some of those stories online, you'll see what I mean.
