Of the two Harriman books I've only read Serpents, and I really enjoyed it and definitely be up for more ENT-B books, with either Captain in command.

I am three chapters into The Captains Daughter, coincidentally, and what I like so far is the characterization of Harriman as not quite the Captain we're used to. I like his inner thoughts and second guessing so far. It is much different than any Enterprise captain so far. Does he stay that way? I get the feeling that Serpents Among the Ruins portrays him as more like a Captain we might expect to see in command of Enterprise.
SatR portrays a Captain Harriman with about twenty more years of life experience under his belt. There are hints of the young officer still caught in his father's shadow, but yes, he's come into his own by the time DRG3 gets to him.

I think SatR was the book from the Lost Era that I was looking forward to the most. I love Harriman and would really like to see him feature in at least one or two more books.

Don't forget that Harriman popped up in the short story collection "Enterprise Logs," in the story "Shakedown." I always enjoyed the story, and in my mind it was the story that really restored Harriman for me.

I'm not sure as I agree with your assessment DEWline. I actually read Serpent long before I read Captain's Daughter and although I do see how it could set the stage and make it a more focused read Serpent certainly worked for me without having read a single word of Captain's Daughter. And although I thoroughly enjoyed Captain's Daughter I do not think it is as strong of a narrative as Serpent.

Yeah, but CD did the initial fleshing out of Harriman as more than the "inexperienced kid captain" caricature that was presented as in Generations, including his poisonous relationship with his father. That established the character, which Serpent took and ran with.

I really liked Serpents a lot . . . so much I stole as much of it as I could and put it in my SNW story "Full Circle." But it's not really stealing as long as you make it back story.

So, yeah, I'd read more Harriman.

I always thought it would be cool to have a series where the Captain isn't all that great and so his staff has to kind of pick up the slack.

You mean Enterprise doesn't count? :D

Hey-oh!

Actually, the part of Archer's character I liked the most was the development between seasons two/threeish and season four, IIRC. He went from an optimistic explorer to cynically telling Hernandez all about the dark and dangerous things he experienced.

I'll echo the sentiment from above: I would love to know the ultimate fate of the Enterprise-B. I'd prefer it to be an official on-screen thing but I guess I could settle for a semi-official novel too.

And for a change of pace instead of a heroic or mysterious demise have it be a totally preventable accident or maintenance failure. :D

Zing and burn. (And I like Enterprise.)

I don't hate Enterprise, but I never thought Archer was all that impressive.

Why not an honorable retirement at the end of its service lifetime? Maybe it's in the fleet museum.

Yeah, the writing of that character in the first three seasons didn't make Archer all that impressive as a captain. In fact, he was overly naive in the first two and over-the-top in season three. The last season, he seemed at last to come into his own, but it was far too late.

Having thoroughly enjoyed Serpents, I would definitely be interested in more Enterprise-B/Harriman stories. Personally, though, I've always wanted to see the end of the Enterprise-B. It's the only NCC-1701 up until the E that we don't know it's ultimate fate.

Well wait a minute...do we really know what happened to NCC 1701-A? All we know is that she was decomissioned, but not scrapped or lost. She might still be intact deep in a far corner of some Starfleet shipyard.....

Well, in a DC comic special it was in a shipyard as a museum piece that Scotty visited after his rescue in 'Relics'. Though in Ashes of Eden, it was sacrificed as a part of Kirk's way of defeating Admiral Drake. (My memory of the actual events are very fuzzy, though - I just remember the ship getting destroyed.) Beyond that, though, I don't think anyone's specifically gone into what became of the A.
