2009 DVD Schedule News

The new Doctor Who Magazine has some information about forthcoming Region 2 DVD releases. Combined with what's already known, it gives a good picture of the 2009 schedule.

26 January will see the release of the E-Space Trilogy ("Full Circle," "State of Decay," "Warrior's Gate") in a three-disc set. Details on the extras for this are available here.

A double pack of the first Doctor stories "The Rescue" and "The Romans" will be released on 23 February.

"Attack of the Cybermen" will complete the season 22 DVD releases when it comes out on 16 March.

Other releases planned for this year will include the seventh Doctor story "Delta and the Bannermen," the fourth Doctor stories "Image of the Fendahl" and (yes, at last) "The Deadly Assassin," the second Doctor finale "The War Games," and a box set including the Pertwee six-parters "Frontier in Space" and "Planet of the Daleks." The big news on this is that the third episodes of "Planet of the Daleks," previously existing only in black and white, has been recolourised using a combination of the chroma dot process recently seen on a "Dad's Army" episode and also some artificial colourisation in the US.

Looks like a good year. I've wanted the E-Space trilogy for a while, so I hope its R1 release will follow pretty quickly.

How long do the R1 releases typically follow the R2 ones? I can't wait for attack of the cybermen it's been a while since I've bought a Doctor Who DVD.

Lately the turnaround has been pretty quick, about three or four months, though it varies. "Attack of the Cybermen" might be out in the US by the end of summer, certainly by the end of this year.

The E-Space trilogy and Battlefield will be released in Region 1 on May 5th. linky with info on the extras.

Looking forward to the "Dalek War" box set (frontier/planet), and The Deadly Assassin. And E-Space. Oh god, my wallet is going to hate me.

That's really good news about the colourisation. I was hoping that one of my favourites, Day of the Daleks, would get released on dvd. Don't suppose anyone has any info on that?

I'm really interested in checking out War Games for the first time. I know it's a long one, but I finally saw Tomb of the Cybermen, and was surprised to find Troughton's actually a really cool Doctor.

I had only really seen him in the Three Doctors and Five Doctors before, where I thought he was frickin annoying as hell. lol

In The Three Doctors and The Five Doctors, though, Troughton is more playing a replica of what people thought his Doctor was like than actually playing his original characterisation, which was much better. If you want a really thundering good Troughton story, I suggest the audio release of The Evil of the Daleks - it's one of the best Doctor Who stories ever, and Troughton was amazing in it.

Are "Frontier in Space" and "Planet of the Daleks" going to be boxset only? Or are they planning on splitting them up? I know they split up the Lost in Time set.

Hard to say. Usually boxsets with multiple stories are also available separately in R1, unless the arrangement of the DVD extras prevents it.

Yeah, either that or the producers just had Troughton play everything a lot more wacky and irritating than before to have a more extreme contrast between Doctors.

I really love his line near the end of Tomb by the way, after goading Toberman on for a while. "So, you really ARE completely mad. Just wanted to be sure."

It's very telling when you can ask most of the actors who have played The Doctor who was their favorite actor (other than themselves) to have had the role before them, and generally the most common answer is Patrick Troughton. He is thoroughly respected and admired through-and-through by his peers.

At least he lived long enough to see Doctor Who last. Poor Hartnell only got to see it go ten years (which, in hindsight, was quite the accomplishment really)...
