Does Trek Lit Include Comics?

I think alot of readers will be keenly interested in Star Trek: Countdown starting in January so is this the place to discuss it?

From Memory Beta:

Star Trek: Countdown will be a four-part comics miniseries published by IDW Publishing starting in January 2009. The series' story, a prequel to the new Star Trek movie, will be by the film's director and producer J.J. Abrams and writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and will be written by Tim Jones and Mike Johnson. The series will be illustrated by David Messina.
The series will "present the origin of Nero, the mysterious Romulan who will ultimately threaten the survival of the entire universe." And more specifically will show Nero and Spock in the post-Nemesis TNG-era prior to time travelling back to the Original Series era of movie. The series may also feature other TNG era characters. Roberto Orci has described the series as "about how you connect the Next Generation era to our continuity, inspired by when we last saw Mr. Spock in "Unification""
Unusually the omnibus for the series will be published in the same month as the last issue (rather than three months later), just in time for the release of the movie in May.

We've discussed Trek comics in this forum on an occasional basis. I have to say that I like the stuff IDW has produced. My favorite miniseries so far has been Klingons: Blood Will Tell, which expanded on the Klingon's involvement in Classic Trek.

Other cool stories include Star Trek: Year Four (both of them), the first Alien Spotlight, which did so well that they're preparing a second series, John Byrrne's story about the Romulans, and the current ongoing title called TNG: The Last Generation.

I just calls 'em as I sees 'em.:vulcan:

Surely we don't include those ghastly Gold Key Trek comics!?

Perhaps by today's standards the Gold Key comics are considered ghastly but back when they were the only new Trek we got when the show went off they air they did not seem all that bad. Of course I was just a teenager then but I have fond memories of those comics.

Having recently read the Gold Key comics on the archive DVD, I found many of them to be surprisingly entertaining. Of course you have to get into the right mindset and not worry about what they get "right" or not, but they can be a lot of fun, and some even have interesting SF ideas.

Remember when the only Star Trek you could get was The Price of the Pheonix? Kind of makes the Gold Key comics look like something by Frank Miller.

:guffaw: Too true!

The Gold Key comics are a good representation of their time. They had less to work with than James Blish did, and they still managed to put together a fair representation of the Star Trek universe.

So it is a prequel to a prequel? What is next, Star Trek: The Fetus Years?

well, Gold Key Star Trek #8 gave us TOS crewmembers as toddlers, so I guess it's time for a visit to the womb

I love 'em for their kitsch value alone! It's Trek through some distorted mirror. Great fun.
