Okay...there were three movies in this series. We watched all three this past weekend, my kids and I...what one was the best and what one was not so?....How do you rank them, in other words...I rank them this way....

    Back to The Future 1
    Back to The Future 3
    and some what lower
    Back to The Future 2

I thought #1 was the best because of the innocent nature of the movie...the second one, to me, was just long and boring and was made with the belief that 'more is better'. #3 Got back to having a better story, and better character moments....

With the most wonderful man in the world!
#3 is unfairly dumped on all the time. It is actually a well structured story that plays to the beats and arc of the first film but in the best sequels' tradition, this time we invert the story by having Doc fall in love and be basically the unwitting McGuffin and Marty having to save HIM. Couple that with all the nudge nudge wink wink moments that harken back to the rest of the series and add one of THE MOST suspenseful climaxes of ANY film and a beautiful deneumont that makes me tear up just thinking about it(I TRULY believe the future is what we make it)and you have a real winner.

Of course, nothing beats the original but #3 is a wonderful piece of family entertainment that, for the life of me, I cannot understand why it is not embraced more. Maybe #2 just left such a sour taste in some people's mouths that they didn't see #3. This is BTTF we are talking about here, not PoTC or The Matrix series!!!!

Your kids will love you if you can find the cartoon.

    1,3,2.

It's inconceivable to think there's a better ranking!

Back to the Future..again and again and again in a Temporal Loop!!!

Well if anyone wants to know why I don't embrace Number 3 as much as 2, it's because it was predictable; it felt like they were retelling the first movie, just in a new setting. I prefer sequels that feel like they are continuing the original story, not repeating it.

Having said that, BTTF3 is not nearly as guilty as, say, most of the sequels to Rocky, The Karate Kid, and such. So I DO like the movie. I just don't love it.

I also wish that both BTTF sequels had not turned all of the most popular jokes from the first film into running gags.

I just watched Part II last night myself.

I think pretty much everyone would agree with that ranking though. The first is just about as perfect a movie as you can make, II has some fun moments but is just too dark and convoluted overall, and III brings back the simpler, more focused storytelling of the first.

II still has a lot going for it though. Of course the ironic thing, is that even though this movie is supposedly the "future" one, it's the altered-1985 and 1955 stuff that works the best I find. With every passing year, the 2015 scenes just look increasingly campy and ridiculous.

There were a few of those running jokes I liked (like Marty waking up believing he was back home, or the skateboard one) but yeah, there were just FAR too many of those overall.

But that was the comedy of both II and III. The same shit kept on happening.

Living on the worlds anus and all, I'm a couple years from seeing the brave and the Bold on freeTV, and I wasn't too impressed by the pilot to continue downloading the episodes... But, it's me? It's me! How can't I love me?

I've probably said it before, but the scene in the third movie where the Doc and Marty are having their photo taken in front of the clock tower is one of my favourites in all of moviedom. The first movie is my fav, though.

I love the BTTF series! My ranking is also 1,3,2 but it was 1,2,3 for a while.

It's one of those series I can easily place myself in sort of. I can walk around my town and wonder what it would be like to visit it 50 years ago. I collect old postards and history books of my town, and can easily envision what used to be there as I'm walking around.

When I watch the BTTF series it always sets off my imagination.

As for the 'running gags', I love 'em! They add 'consistancy' and the feeling of 'no matter where you go, there you are', and 'the more things change, the more they stay the same'.

It's 1,3,2 for me as well.

The first is a timeless classic, as well as a great 80s movie.

The third was just below it, I thought. The only part I don't like was the very end with the train. It was a little goofy, but they had to avoid a downer ending. Also, the pacing was slower, it seemed.

I actually think that if the future scenes in part II had been done more seriously and had not been all jokes then it would be my #2. I really like the darker take on things in the second half. And it's the only movie where we get to see the DeLorean flying. Oh, and hoverboards. Plus, the way they edited their way back into the original (before digital effects, mind you) was just great.

The first sets up the story line for the other two, they all flow nicely together, however number 2 was overly dark and insane frankly. This one guy can take over the whole area and make it a casino because he has money? No, I don't like that at all.

Yeah they really played up the wackiness of the future a little too much (with the double neck ties and the ultra bright colors everywhere).

The thing that cracks me up though, is that back when the movie came out the "Cafe 80s" looked completely ridiculous and over the top to me (which was the intention).

But now I look at that scene and I'm like, "Wait, isn't that what the 80s was really like?" Somehow it doesn't look that far off now. lol :D

I rank them 1, 3, 2 as well, but the thing I really love about the second one is the whole concept of using a sequel to go back into the first movie.

Actually, this was one of the better ones. They show Gnort, and all the other Lanterns as well...except for Hal or John...but Guy was his usual messed up self..but it was only a cameo..

The rest of the story dealt with Batman/Green Arrow back in the ancient past, trying to help Merlin protect Escalibre, the sword....I thought it was actually right up there with the JLU version of the same story...

    Indeed. Take THAT, Forrest Gump!

I actually rank mine 1,2,3. All were great, but I liked the machinations of time travel over doing the classic sequel thing as Part 3 so obviously was. Personally though, I do take all three as a single movie watching experience, and marathoning all three is always a fun time.

Not me. 2 is my favorite. 3 is a western, so that alone puts it at the bottom (although it DOES have some good stuff in it, the non-western parts, for example.) And yes, 1 is good, but not as good as 2.
