(The Telegraph) quotes executive producer Piers Wenger, saying that "Someone terribly exciting like Billie Piper, who was at the beginning of her acting career but who had a profile for other reasons, would be great. We are looking for someone whose light can burn brightly."

Some have taken this to mean "Lily Allen" (as the OG article heavily mentions).

The idea of Lily Allen in the Tardis - well, I'll admit it, it fills me with dread. But, insert standard "but Catherine Tate surprised us all" paragraph here.

So who would we like to see as Doc 11's major companion? I'd love to see Sheridan Smith. She's brilliant in the audios with Paul McGann, and I think she'd make a good fit for Matt Smith. I'd also love to see Michelle Ryan.

Sadly, neither of those seem to fit the parameters suggested by Piers Wenger, so they're probably both out.

As we've learned with the casting of Matt Smith, whoever becomes the companion will be chosen after an audition process, it won't just be who the producers instinctively want (at least I hope not)

You do have to wonder when Lily Allen's dad has on the BBC though since they seem detemined to make her famous!

Oh yeah, Gina Belman would be brilliant for a one off. I'm not sure I can picture her as a regular though. She certainly occupies that British actor category of "destined to appear on Who at some point".
