30GB Zune's Mass-Suicide...

What do you use for your casual MP3/portable music player ?

Zunes are garbage. If you're dumb enough to buy a Zune you deserve an mp3 player that acts like that.

1. Zunes are not garbage. they're the best PMP out there . . . the 1st gen Zune 30s run on the exact same firmware as the current generation. ipods don't do that

First generation iPods also had mechanical scroll wheels and black and white screens. Now, are you seriously suggesting that it's a bad thing that Apple doesn't maintain one piece of software that drives both that and, say, an iPod Touch?

The fact that the 30gb's failed and the 80gb's didn't pretty clearly shows that the Zunes are not actually running the same software. What MS did for the Zune is to add new functionality to old products whereas most companies... Apple included... would only put the new functionality in new products. I have a really hard time seeing how you can turn that into a negative.

Wrong.
Apple updates all iPods with the same software-based upgrades and features as newer models.

I don't think a Zune makes a bad purchase,'cause $90 for 30GB is a good deal. But just like most bargains, there a price to pay later...like your media player not telling time.

Incorrect. There are features on newer iPod's that are not available on older ones. As one example I still have a 5g iPod kicking around, I cannot have Coverflow on it (not without a firmware hack, anyway). I'm sure there are other examples that I am unaware of. Every single software feature that you find on a newer Zune is available on an older Zune, regardless of when that feature was released.

Thanks. I hope my wife enjoys her Christmas present. I got her a Zune 120GB. I'm a network administrator with 23 years of tech support and break-fix experience. I researched my purchase pretty well, too, and I believe she'll be very happy with it. We've already noticed several features that her iPod 30GB didn't have - the iPod that just died for no apparent reason, just outside of warranty, like iPods are prone to do.

Oh, and come Jan. 20th, we'll have a president who uses a Zune, too. Thought you'd like to know. :p

A - I hope your wife had a lovely xmas and enjoys her present for years.
B - Your IT job doesn't have anything to do with mp3 players. If it makes you feel somehow smarter about them, good for you.
C - You did all that research and your conclusion was to buy a ZUNE?

Wow! I guess all that research doesn't mean much.

D - I had an iPod that died out of warranty too, you know what I did? I bought a battery for 30 bucks and changed it. It worked great after that.

E - Obama uses iPods. But what does that have to do with anything?

Listen, if my wife got me a Zune, I would feel like the kid who loved transformers and his dumb parents got him a gobot for christmas.
Enjoy!

Ultimately it is like having a favourite Nazi (well Goering if you must ask, he had style) it is all just choosing a different flavour of shit tying your colours to the mask of any corporation, be it MS, Apple or Sony.

But given as the other option is to have no cool gadgets, I think I will stick to choosing the best product in my opinion whenever I buy - and not this idiotic loyalty/rivalry bit.

Well, I wasn't turning it into a negative. My point was that there just isn't enough difference between a new Zune and an old Zune for there to be major feature gaps. Now, if Microsoft keeps updating the old ones to a degree comparable to, say, Apple adding video to the original black and white iPod, I'll be impressed.

And I don't think coverflow is a good example of a feature added to an iPod that could be easily be applied in a software update. I have a feeling that was enabled by some hardware advances (though I'm not one hundred percent sure). The best example would be text search, which was added to late-model iPod 5Gs, but not to the earlier ones, even though a couple other small software and feature updates in the newer ones were added to the older ones in firmware updates. I remember that seemed a little weird at the time.

There are other possibilities that could've been added to the older models but weren't, like the option to view song lyrics, but without knowing how they made the things, there's always a possibility there was some limitation to doing that that isn't apparent.

Screw iPod AND Zune, Archos all the way :p
Well, yes - but there wasn't an Archos available in the price range I was looking at that had features that I would want if I got an Archos. So I'll probably get myself one for my birthday here in a few months. ;)

I don't. I just don't like being told I'm stupid for making a perfectly reasonable choice. We had a bad experience with an iPod, so I went with something else that seemed good - and so far the seeming has been borne out.

Sure. It does what you want and hasn't failed. That's all you really want isn't it?

For me, that's how I feel about the Ipod I was given (Not sure if the Zune was released when I got it).

It is not against you dude, seriously if you have made a choice and are happy with it dont let anyone tell you that you are wrong because of x, y and z.

I have, and I am happy with it. But I'd have no problem with having someone tell me I had made a less than optimal decision for x, y, and z - if those variables represented logical reasons or equipment specs. What Chess Piece Face said was more of the "your choice sucks because it is dumb, and people who choose what you chose are stupid poopy heads and I hate them" variety.

I really shouldn't have responded, since there is no real, meaningful rebuttal to an empty, meaningless attack like that, but it struck me wrong, and to be perfectly honest, at a moment when I was in the mood to argue with someone about something.

Yes, Apple/Microsoft is one of the nigh-on religious debates of the forum, I'm afraid.

I understand where you're coming from, though. I've had nothing but bad luck with Sony products going back to the first cassette Walkmans, so I tend to avoid Sony unless there are no other options.

I know how you feel. I'm constantly being called a fag on the internet because I use a Mac, which are toys, and which suck.

Never mind the fact that my macs at work and at home are high end powerhouses that allow me to do intensive graphics, video and audio work, and that the comment that "macs are toys" is usually being made by some kid who only uses his PC to play games and download torrents, AND that I do own a windows laptop, which I am typing on now, and I know from experience that windows is pretty much shit.

Also, Zunes are garbage.

So, to make sure we're on the same page... you dislike the fact that people make call the product of your preference bad for no reason, but will happily do so to others?

Almost. The difference is that Macs are rock solid machines that give an honestly better experience to the user, while Zunes are garbage.

And the research this conclusion is based upon has been performed by whom?
