The title says it all, just a quick thought that popped in too my noggin, That star trek seems to be at its most popular when the democrats are in power. Got cancelled both times when republicans where in power. Discuss

How do you explain ST:TNG?

The most popular modern Trek series. Began while Republicans were in power. Most of its run during the presidencies of Repulblicans. Ended while a Democratic president was in office?

There doesn't appear to be any correlation. TOS became very popular in the 1970s, when Nixon and Ford were president. I think Trek was already pretty popular by the time Jimmy Carter became president. The 1980s, the glory days of the Trek movies, was the Reagan Era. And while DS9 and Voyager were on during the Clinton years, Enterprise died during the Bush years.

You cannot say one way or another.

Insufficient data.

I'm going with whoever was President during the majority of these series' runs.

The fact that Nixon just happened to come in power when TOS was cancelled is a coincidence. The fact that ENT was cancelled when Bush was president is also a coincidence. Star Trek had been running for 18 continuous years at that point.

The most successful versions of Star Trek were the TOS movies and TNG series. Mostly when, as has been said, Reagan and HW Bush were Presidents.

We've had Republicans in office for 28 of the last 40 years. It goes without saying that a lot more would've happened when they were in office than when they weren't.

Not everything is political.

Your list is off.

TOS began production under Johnson ("The Cage," Seasons One through the first half of Season Three) and ended production under Nixon (second half of Season Three).

Star Trek: The Motion Picture was done under Carter.

Star Trek II - Star Trek IV were done under Reagan.

Star Trek V and Star Trek VI were done under Bush Sr. (Most of V would have been produced under Reagan, though.)

TNG began under Reagan (Season One and part of Two), continued under Bush Sr. (Seasons Two through part of Six) and ended under Clinton (second half of Season Six and Season Seven).

DS9 began at the very tail end of Bush Sr.'s term ("Emissary" aired 17 days before Clinton took office) and continued the rest of its run under Clinton.

VOY began its run under Clinton (Seasons One through the first half of Season Seven) and ended under Bush 43 (second half of Season Seven).

First Contact and Insurrection were under Clinton, whilst Nemesis was under Bush.

ENT did its entire run under Bush 43.

^ Sci, it's not off because I said, "I'm going with whoever was President during the majority of these series' runs." A small but crucial part of my post. ;)

TOS = 2.5 seasons under Johnson, 0.5 seasons Nixon. Majority goes to Johnson.

TOS movies = 1 movie under Carter, 3 movies under Reagan, 2 movies under HW Bush. Majority goes to Reagan.

TNG = 1.5 seasons under Reagan (actually less since the second season started so late), 4 seasons under HW Bush, and 1.5 seasons under Clinton. Majority goes to HW.

And so on.

While everyone does over do politics........

The facts are that Star Trek has been influenced by U.S. events.

I remember Michael Piller saying how the Rodney King riots influenced his ideas for the early look of Deep Space Nine (looted and trashed by the Cardassians) and Piller also described his early ideas for Voyager taking place as he was

direct quote

"sitting around in the after glow of the election" (referring to Clintons election in 1992).

Then again,

Piller was influenced to write Star Trek: Insurrection by applying Rogaine to his scalp in an attempt to salvage his hairline.

So perhaps he should've stuck with the political influences.
