I had presumed that the timeline seen in Chimes was not the altered timeline created in "Yesteryear," but, rather, a separate timeline that had a similar origin point.

Don't forget that although Spock was seemingly successful in restoring history in "Yesteryear", all was not exactly as it had been, since his pet sehlat died years earlier than he'd previously remembered.

What a bitter-sweet mix of News. The cancelling of the Crucible-Hardback is a catastrophe in my opinion but I more or less expected it, since there still we absolutely no concrete informations about it.
The same with the delay of the Myriad Universes-Trade, a disaster... The first two volumes were outstanding, the best Trek-Books of 2008.

But apart from that, it all sounds quite good. More TOS-Stand-alone-novels is a great thing and the general outline for the continuation of the Post-Nemesis-multi-series-continuity sounds quite promising. Not so sure, what to make out of The Sorrows of Empire being expanded to a novel. Sure, it's a great story and David Mack has certainly proven to be one of the most talented writers of Trek-Fiction ever, but on the other hand I would have preferred another complete new novel instead of just an expansion and reprint of an old story.
About the Covers shown, I more or less agree with what's already been said, The Never-Ending Sacrifice looks great, not so sure about Losing the Peace but, pardon me, The Soul Key is certainly not up to the standards of recent PB-ST-Covers.

Hardly a disaster. Books have been delayed many times before, from Unity to Fearful Symmetry to this month's Shards and Shadows. But they've generally been judged to be worth the wait.

Not so sure, what to make out of The Sorrows of Empire being expanded to a novel. Sure, it's a great story and David Mack has certainly proven to be one of the most talented writers of Trek-Fiction ever, but on the other hand I would have preferred another complete new novel instead of just an expansion and reprint of an old story.

Well, Dave has this to say about it on his blog:

My new commission for this project is to add another 40,000-50,000 words to the story, expanding its scope to reveal more characters' points of view, more of the historical sweep of the 23rd century, and more of Spock's grand plan.

Which all sounds like stuff I'd like to see.

Besides, I wouldn't mind if it caught on. Personally, I'd love the chance to double the length of Places of Exile. (Hint, hint....)

Hardly a disaster. Books have been delayed many times before, from Unity to Fearful Symmetry to this month's Shards and Shadows. But they've generally been judged to be worth the wait.

For that matter, the entire Myriad Universes concept had been sitting in limbo for years before Marco decided the time was right.

The cancellation of the Crucible hardcover marks a disappointment for me, of course, but it had little to do with anything other than the harsh economic climate pervading the country in general and the publishing industry in particular. Contrary to one post, concrete information was available for the omnibus, including its table of contents, which I offer again here.

• "The Delicate Currents of the Past" (new short story)

One item on the "Upcoming" list has me intrigued: "(A) TOS era reprint in April (2010)."

As far as I can recall, there are no TOS-era hardcovers or trade paperbacks currently awaiting reprinting as a MMPB. There's nothing on the announced schedule for 2009 that might potentially be reprinted in April 2008, either.

So, I'm not really going out on a limb to speculate that this is likely a MMPB reprint of the (not-yet-announced) novelization of the upcoming film.

I suppose it's also possible that there won't be a novelization of the film (as there apparently won't be a comic adaptation.) In which case, maybe there's another Shatnerverse novel in the works, but not yet announced.

Oh, man, that would be fantastic. At twice the length, that might have been one of my favorite Trek novels ever.

As it stands, there are only three books by you in my top 10; would four be too much to ask?

Not always. Sometimes they were put in the regular monthly slots, especially when there was a production delay. Keep in mind that we've just lost one of our two main editors, so there are bound to be delays and adjustment pains. There may simply have been no choice but to put a reprint in one of the early 2010 slots.

Besides, there are plenty of worthy old books that haven't been in print or easily available for a long time. For many current readers, they'd be fresh.

Delays happen even in the best of times. I'm just happy there is a third volume! Of course, I may be biased.

Not always. Sometimes they were put in the regular monthly slots, especially when there was a production delay. Keep in mind that we've just lost one of our two main editors, so there are bound to be delays and adjustment pains. But they were, as I recall, ALWAYS a reprint of a hardcover or trade paperback. I don't know of a time when it was a reprint of an old MMPB.

No argument there! But as virtually ANY Trek mass market paperback is available for 75 cents plus shipping on half.com, it doesn't seem like the most effective use of a "slot"."

Even if that's so, that's hardly the key issue. If a delay happens and a reprint is the only way to get a book out that month, then past precedent doesn't mean squat.

Man, I was looking forward to this, but now I'm even more disappointed. Why not just make it a trade paperback instead of a hardcover? I hope we get to see this someday...

I'm looking forward to Enterprise The Romulan war book after that quote from Margaret Clark said about T'Pol. Also looking forward to Mere Anarchy and Troublesome minds. And the Titan book and Ds9 books.
