Benjamin Button

This movie is in my Top Ten List of 2008. And just might be the best movie of the year.

It's almost 2:45 and seems like 30 minutes long. The make-up and CGI makeup are amazing. The story is fascinating and the performances are pitch perfect.

It's like a lot of chapters in a seamless book and the best thing of all is it works on you in a very gentle way, even though major things are occurring. It lets you enjoy the story instead of forcing you to.

Avoid ALL story spoilers. Going in blind is the only way to experience this movie. And it does answer many of the questions you're thinking about before you go in.

Just a really, really nice piece of work.

Thanks for the review. That's good to hear, because I have been really looking forward to this. Anything by Fincher is usually a lock for me anyway, but this one looked like something special.

I agree with you 100%. It was an excellent movie and Brad Pitt gives a great performance (as does everyone).

Another nearly 3-hour Brad Pitt movie with some deep message or something? I hope it will not be another 'Meet Joe Black'.

this movie was absolutely fantastic!
I'm no movie reviewer, but I can confidently say that this is the best movie of the year

"I ever tell you I got hit by lightnin' seven times?"

I just can't get past the fact that its just based on a bad sci-fi cliche.

Mork & Mindy did it. And I even think there was an alien race in Buck Rogers that aged backwards.

So not to spoil it, but does he eventually die as a 5'11 baby?

It ended as you would sort of expect it. But it was still moving.

He de-aged as the movie went on, getting physically younger until he hit infancy. He went from tiny old wrinkly guy to cute as a button baby. While Cate aged until she became a very very old woman, (from slim, petite teenage dancer to old woman)

Eh, wasn't all that impressed by this one. It's certainly a beautifully made movie, and the 3 hour running time flies by... but I just didn't find it all that compelling or emotionally engaging for some reason.

Part of the problem is that I didn't see what kind of special wisdom or unique insight we were supposed to glean from Benjamin's life in the FIRST place. Yeah on the outside he appears to age backwards, but it's only a cosmetic thing. Ultimately he has the same life cycle as anyone else, and meets and loses people thoughout his life like anyone else! So what's the point?

Yeah the relationship with Daisy is kind of tragic, but that's about the only real challenge I see that's any different (and actually she grew up to be such an annoying airhead that I had a hard time caring about that relationship anyway).

The other problem is I just found myself completely distracted by the aging FX throughout the movie. Yeah a lot of it was really well done-- especially the old age makeup on Pitt, and the de-aging technology they used on him and Blanchett-- but it still called too much attention to itself I thought.

And some of the old age makeup on the father and Blanchett was actually kind of AWFUL, and looked like something you'd see in the 70s and 80s! lol

I was dragged to this expecting schmaltzy Brad Pitt epic-length oscar-buzz tripe and found this movie to be incredibly moving. I outright cried several times. It was fascinating, funny, heart-warming, sad, and yes -epic. It actually was like watching a great book, something I've rarely encountered. It deserves critical accolades. Probably my favorite movie of the year and sorry, it blows TDK's grimdark uberdrama right out of the water.

Go see this movie.

I saw this movie today and at times my eyes filled with tears. I don't normally like Brad Pitt but I think he was good in this role.

I found the movie to be a bit long but that is more a result of me not being able to sit for long periods due to arthritis. I was in pain during the last 20 minutes or so and that spoilt the enjoyment a bit for me.

I will give the movie 8 out of 10.

One problem I had with the movie was Daisy's daughter's acceptance of the whole story.

Don't listen to these two..the movie is really good. Someone earlier in this thread compared it to reading a book. And, as we all know, reading books is becoming a lost talent for today's young kids. Book sales are at an all time low...this movie is aimed at those who can sit through a movie, and absorb it like fine wine. There are those who need to see Soda pop movies, like Twilight, because its just about all their minds can take in.

This movie was very good. The makeup effects will win the Oscar. On ROBERT SCORPIO MOVIE SCALE of 1-10, I give the move an 8+....here are some other movies I have recently scene, and their ROBERT SCORPIO RATING...

BEE MOVIE (just saw this movie last weekend. I liked it....rating-8)
From Russia With Love (007 movie that I think is over rated....rating 7)
Bolt (Animated movie with John Travolta...very good...go see it...rating 8)
The Visitor (no, not Ben Sisko, but a movie about illegal aliens..I found it to be
somewhat overated...rating-7)
For Your Eyes Only (One of Bond's best, IMO, holds up over time..rating-8)
I am Legend (Finally saw this movie two days ago...not bad...could have been better though....rating-7+)
Hancock (saw this right after LEGEND. Again,it was pretty good but could have been so much better...rating 7+)
The Omen (Gregory Peck version...I hate this movie because it is so scary in a subtle way..best decapitation scene of all time (thank you Chancellor Gorkon)...rating-8)

Button is a good movie. Its certainly worth a trip to the local theater.

As for the nay-sayers, if this movie is not good then please by all means share with the rest of us the names of the films that were good.

How come?

It's just creepy and unsettling looking.

The whole premise is pretty much that for me. Not my alley. Not into the macabre.

While one image in your mind of an old-looking child may be "macabre" to you, I can assure you that the movie itself is anything but.

If you like movies like Gump or Edward Scissorhands or any other peculiar character studies you'll like this one.

This really happened right?
Yes its a true story!
I heard two older women say this in my theater! :wtf: :guffaw:

Of course this was in the first 10 minutes of the film. When Benjamin was just a wrinkled baby. Maybe they had not seen the trailers and did not know the actual premise yet. I truly hope they realized this was a fantasy by the end of the story!

Oh and I loved it! Might even see it again.

This is probably my favorite movie of the year just like Fincher's Zodiac was last year. I'm really impressed with this movie.

I *hate* Edward Scissorhands.

But, sigh, I like Brad Pitt. I may end up seeing this one sooner or later.

This was an excellent film, we will see what happens at the Oscars..

I found the end interesting, when he is physically about twelve or so he actually mentally degrades, forgetiing things and slipping on and off into dymentia. So that would agree with his current age in the 70's range somewhere but also may have been because he had so much knowledge and information his brain had regressed to a childs brain and could not handle all that knowledge.
