Dead Companions?

What companions have died on the series? For simplicities' sake, companion is defined as someone who has appeared with the doctor in more than one story/serial.

I know there was Adric, and Donna, but were there any others?

Katarina, a companion of the first Doctor, was introduced in the final episode of "The Myth Makers" and killed off four episodes later, in the fourth part of "The Daleks' Master Plan." By the definition you give, she's the only other one I can think of. (Well, Captain Jack has died a whole bunch of times, but I guess you don't mean that.) Some people regard Sara Kingdom, who dies at the end of the same story, as a companion, because of the length of her appearance and the weird structure of the story, but she doesn't fit your criteria.

Edit: knew I was forgetting one. Kamelion, a robot introduced in "The King's Demons" in season 20, disappeared into the depths of the TARDIS after that story and then showed up again in "Planet of Fire," where he died.

Oh, and if we're gonna count having memories of the Doctor wiped as dying, then the second Doctor's companion Jamie and Zoe lost their memories of all but their first encounters with the Doctor in his final story, "The War Games."

The books also kill off Mel and Ace (who is then replaced with an alternate universe version, or maybe it's the alternate version who dies), and arguably Sarah Jane and Harry Sullivan.

Uh... Donna didn't die (technically).

"The program is complete. The Donna we knew no longer exists." - alt Talia

And that's what got me to thinking about this subject, were there others. I had forgotten about Jamie and Zoe getting wiped as well, so they certainly count.

It's just too bad Mel didn't die on screen. That would have ruled.

I don't remember Katarina at all ... need to brush up on her history.

Who is Dodo? (not counting Neroon, of course)

Yeah, how do you get this "Donna dies" business? If you're talking about "Turn Left", I don't suppose that can really count since the "real" Donna is still alive at the end. What dies is an "alt Donna".

Dodo Chaplet is one of the first Doctor's companions. She was introduced in The Massacre and departed in The War Machines. She was killed off in the novel Who Killed Kennedy.

Ah, gotchya ... Other than one episode of Daleks' Master Plan from Lost in Time, I have nothing of her era on dvd. But War Machines is coming out early in the new year, so that'll change.

You know the history better than I ... What kind of companion was she? All screaming and yipping, or was she a scrapper, or what?

To be fair, Alt Donna took the experience of the real Donna down with her. One of the Doctor's reasons for having a companion is so that the companion learns and grows in some way, and all that work went down the drain.

Actually, she's not in Master Plan. But she is in:
- The Massacre
- The Ark
- The Celestial Toymaker
- The Gunfighters
- The Savages
- The War Machines

Unfortunately, The Ark, the surviving bits of The Celestial Toymaker, and The Gunfighters are all a bit crap. She never really made much of an impression on me either way, to be honest.

More of a 'death of personality' sort if thing.

I assume that Romana and Susan are dead given that they were Time Ladies. Especially Susan given the way the Doctor has talked about his family being dead.

Peri lived, per cheesy clip in Colin Baker's final episode. From what I understand, Nicola Bryant was pretty pissed they retconned her death out at the last minute. She wanted Peri to go out in a unique way, instead of 'Oh she's in love'. On the other hand, it was a nice note that the character fell for someone (Brian Blessed) that was louder and more bombastic than Colin's Doctor. Personally, I always felt Peri's character got shafted in terms of any true evolution or examination. I know back in the day the companions were never the focus. But, for some reason, Peri's character just seemed more one-dimensional than most others...

^ Yeah and the accent didn't help. It's a shame they retconned that, I think that last scene Nicola proved what she could do given the material.
