Why are the DVDs so expensive?

I stopped by a book & media store the other day and decided that while I was spending my gift cards it wouldn't hurt to see how much some ST DVDs would cost.

the Voyager sets are $70 PER SEASON. wtf?

I didn't even look at the other series, instead I went to the clearance section and breathed deeply in order to avoid a heart attack.

So, is there a reason the box sets are so pricey?

I guess it would make sense since normal movies are like an average of $20 and seasons usually have atleast 3 DVDs..but it's so annoying.

Is VHS less expensive?

please, tell me why the world is so unfair...

Paramount likes to gouge the fans for one thing. The prices for DVDs are much better online and you have the benefit of much more generous discounts.

It seems to depend where you buy them from. I've been getting them from eBayUK for anything from between £15 - £20, some pre-owned, some still newly packaged.

For what it's worth, Wal-Mart usually sells Trek season sets for just over $50 (not including the Remastered TOS sets, I believe).

Why are the DVDs so expensive?

Why was gas over $4/gallon?

The demand was there and the consumer still paid the higher price.

In the UK now the re-releases in cheaper packing can be had for £16 a season if one shops around.

I hope now that Blu ray is catching on that the DVD prices for Star Trek will drop. Most other TV shows average around $30-$40 so Parmount charging that much money is a theivery. If those DVD's were to drop to about $40, Paramount would be making tons more money.

The prices are horrible I agree, I dont know where paramount get off charging such prices

The slimline releases in Aus have been very cheap, buying them all at once in extremely nice special edition boxes fro EZdvd has been even cheaper (works out to 40.00 or under a season). Still waiting for TOS-R to show up in this format--or show up at all.

Prior to these blessed cheaper editions ebay was my friend. Had no trouble selling the clunkier expensive sets I'd bought on ebay second hand back to ebay (or via ebay).

TOS however is still 184.00 a season here, and that's not TOS-R. The last holdout of affordability..

Buy one season a month. 1n 12 months you'll be 3/4 through your second series.

the Voyager sets are $70 PER SEASON. wtf?

Divide the total by the number of episodes in the box and it's pretty cheap.

Other TV series on DVD might be cheaper per season, but they're not Star Trek. It's the law of supply and demand. As demand falls, the price falls.

When I consider the price I paid per episode on VHS without complaint, even the Trek sets were ridiculously cheap. It's just that purchasing series on DVD became more mainstream than the niche market VHS was, and other series (generally in the UK its US imports) were absurdly cheap.

If those DVD's were to drop to about $40, Paramount would be making tons more money.

Nope. Or they'd be doing it.

Warehouse storage fees and freight charges have a lot to do with pricing. The more copies made at once, the cheaper each item will be, but if too many are made in advance, to keep up with the huge demand on very-lowly priced items, then very large amounts of money are consumed by warehouse storage and transit.

ST DVDs are released in tiers of price points. Early adopters are happy to pay any price to own the set on the day of release. Then the prices drop as each tier of consumer purchases their projected allotment of sets. Eventually, when the market is almost saturated, the sets hit the bargain tables.

^^^ You mean the all the Star Trek DVDs are expensive because of the Enterprise opening theme?

Damn you Enterprise! Damn you to hell!
