Wal-Mart fouls -- another chain takes the good publicity

The employees at the Walmart here look fucking miserable. Most of them seem slightly mentally handicapped, so I guess it's good that they're able to work, but you can tell they're unhappy. Half of them look like they belong in a circus act. We even have a Bearded Lady!

The clientele looks like they would shank you in the parking lot. I am honestly surprised every time I find my car NOT broken into when I exit the store.

The only reason I even go is because it's 2 minutes from my apartment.

I don't know where in the hell most of you people live, but good Lord, our Wal-Mart here is nothing like that.

:confused::confused::confused:

I never ceased to be amazed at the sheer level of hate that can be leveled at a company that has done nothing to its detractors.

Seems to be doing plenty to the poor slaves who WORK there, though. Have you even read that Wake Up site?
If people don't like where they work, then they should quit  The workers there aren't slaves.

EXACTYLY! Comparing them to slaves, well frankly it's ridiculous, and even insulting. It much like people throwing around the word "Nazi this and Nazi that" all the time, they have no perspective at all.

A good friend of mine's daughter has worked at Wal-Mart for years now. And it's been so terrible to her that she transferred with the company to another store.

As someone else said upthread, I do not understand the irrational hatred people have for places such as Wal-Mart. I guess it's just what we do these days. Hate Wal-Mart. Hate Microsoft. Hate Sony. Hate any successful company or business.

It's just Walmart, too. No other stores around here are like that.

But you couldn't pay me to step foot in Missouri ever again, so :p

It's envy and jealousy. Same reason why many people around the world hate the U.S. but would move here in a second if they could.

People don't always have a choice. What if no one else in the area is hiring? What do you suggest these people do, live on the street?

The workers there aren't slaves.

I think these people would beg to differ.

But then again, if you actually *like* having unaffordable health insurance, being forced to work off the clock and/or denied breaks which you are entitled to under state labor laws, being LOCKED IN THE FUCKING STORE if you're working a graveyard shift, etc., then who am I to judge? :p

Exactly. The economy isn't exactly allowing people the opportunity to be picky these days.

See, this is the problem. By forcing suppliers to cut them special deals and other shady business practices, Walmart forces their competitors out of business. So that means that when people look for jobs, the competitors who could (theoretically) offer them better wages and working conditions are out of business, and pretty much the only store in town is Walmart. So the only employer is Walmart.

When I got out college, with no job experience, I lived in a tiny horseshit town in Tennessee. Walmart and the factories were pretty much the only employers in town. I lucked out in that I got a job by a locally owned pizza place, but I was forced to put in an application for a company I HATED in order to get a job in a town that had little to no alternatives.

The point being, due to their own practices, Walmart ensures that for the people who are working there, they are the only option for steady employment. Walmart made a name for itself by opening up in small towns that had little other stores, so it's always been an option for these people. After Sam Walton died and his heirs started their shady practices, they started killing off their compeition and killing off any other viable employers for thousands of employees in small towns. So, no- they can't just quit and go somewhere else. There's nowhere else to go.

I don't really care for shopping at WalMart for various reasons, but working there when I was a college student was pretty awful. Baba, I had forgotten being locked in the store...that was completely bizarre.
I think the overwhelming feeling of the managers not looking out for my interests in the slightest still stick with me, since I have had jobs where the management was completely different, supporting, encouraging, expecting quality work, but reciprocating hard work fairly...it all equals a better employee who gives a rip. I'm sure there are better WalMarts than others, though.

As a side note, one day this woman came in to the ladies fitting room to try on some clothes and for some odd reason (odd shoppers at WalMart often times), she either forgot to or chose not to close the door all the way. Two of the male managers hot-footed it over there within seconds (they must've been bored and watching the security monitors or something), to stand afar and gape. It bugged me for various reasons, not really too much out of prudishness, but mostly because they were acting so stupid gaping like that, and as senior management of a major retail chain, they made no effort to protect her privacy or show her respect as a customer. They just decided to enjoy the show. I walked over and closed the door for her and they wandered off, pouting.

I think that I'm the only person in the world that doesn't have problems with Wal-Mart, though my local Wal-Mart's both win awards every year for customer service.

But sending that man away was just wrong.

I once answered the phone in Walmart's paint department because it rang about 12 times without an actual employee picking it up. The customer service is fucking awful there.

^ I'm sorry to hear that Salt Truck. That does suck. The longest I've ever had to wait when calling our local Wal*Mart was - at most - three rings (but I rarely call).

They're too cheap to hire enough staff to adequately cover the store and they don't bother to adequately train them in customer service. Add the low pay and crappy working conditions, and I wouldn't answer the phone either.

At my last company, we had a girl that was fired for missing 9 out of 14 shifts in the span of three weeks. She later called me and asked me for a recommendation with another retailer, and I told her that I just could not recommend that anyone else hire her. I joined another sales team a few weeks later and she applied for a job at my new store, and I told my boss that hiring her would be a mistake.

Six months later, I ran into my local Walmart to see if they had something in stock that was sold out elsewhere. Guess who I saw working there? It's the girl that I wouldn't have hired! And knowing that was the kind of customer service that Walmart provides, I decided my money was better off elsewhere.

The same thing Sears Roebuck did many, many years before.
