Dear Movie Studios, Marketers and DVD Manufacturers;

Who needs a digital copy of a movie you have on disc anyway?

People besides you? Millions upon millions of people who like portable video on their iPods?

it must shock you that everybody is not you.

They're doing this to address an issue with DRM - namely format shifting. The digital copy on, for example, Hancock is playable on a PSP.

I've already paid for an expensive Blu-Ray and so, legally, the only way I can play it on my PSP as well is if I buy the film on UMD as well. The digital copy Sony put on the second disc (which is a DVD, rather than a Blu-Ray) saves me that cost.

As far as I am concerned it is a welcome additional feature.

But are you willing to pay an additional $4 for it?

I'm not. But I want special features.

So I'm fucked.

T'Baio, you and I have had our disagreements at times, but in this, you are absolutely 100% correct. I could not possibly agree with you more.

In my case, the discs I have with digital copy on them are Blu-Rays. They haven't cost me any more than they would without it.
