Do you consider Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer to be an official part of the Santa Claus legend?

Yes, but tragically... he collided with a 747 over Madrid earlier this year. Authorities have confirmed that "The reindeer in Spain was hit mainly by the plane."

He's definitely canonical. I think the TV special has pretty much cemented Rudolph into the Christmas canon, regardless of why he was invented (although the others were invented by one guy for a poem, so one person gets a big say in these types of things).

Rudolph should not be considered canon. Donner was never supposed to have a kid and Rudolph's collar number starts with zero. Zero!!! Damn that JJ Abrams and his stupid alternate universe!

Okay, that's it, everyone out of the gene-pool. When we start having canon fights over Santa's Reindeer it's time to call it a day

And everyone knows that the only Rudoplh remastered is officially now canon, and Elf Okuda's encylopedia is out of date :p

SC was great. Then SC 2 came along and they just couldn't duplicate the magic. But worst was giving the franchise to Brannon and Braga, Rudolph was bad enough, but when they put Mrs Claus in a catsuit and brought in the super hot cyborg elf that was just too much. Then the endless time travel...

Could have been worse. Did you hear they were planning a series were SC gets lost in some place called "Antarctica" and must spend 70 years trying to get home  I mean come on, how are they going to explain feeding the Reindeer week after week, and I heard that Rudoplh's nose now moves into different configurations for flight and for walking.

But apparently some of the reindeer are rebels they captured and had to add them to the sleigh to have enough to get it to fly. They could do cool stories with the conflict between the two sets of reindeer....

Sadly, the OP is quite incorrect in both options.

There are 10 reindeer. The 10th being Olive..

"...Olive, the other reindeer, used to laugh..."

Well, how else is Santa supposed to visit every good kid? Though they kind of wrote themselves into a hole with that one.

To me, Rudolph is like Robin in the Batman universe.
Uh wanted Batman/Robin = Santa/Rudolph gay joke just formulated in my mind...must scrub brain with .45 colt.
 More like how Robin wasn't always part of the Batman lore. Look at the last few Batman movies- no Robin. But a couple before those had Robin. And we had a couple without, with Keaton.

Same goes for Rudoloph. In some stories during the 20th going into our century have Rudolph and others doesn't.
