My Warped Canadian Santa....

As promised here are a couple of early shots of my custom made old-fashioned Santa. And, yes, that's me behind the beard.

Santa doesn't care much for milk and cookies. He'd rather have a Rickard's Red.

She would make my Christmas merry........

I think the costume came out all right, too. I've gotten near universal positive response over it. Right off most seem to think it looks nicely classic. The beard is cool because it's contoured to the shape of my face.

Tell her she's been "very naughty", then stuff her sotcking.

Just out of curiousity ... do Canadian Santas say, "What do you want for Christmas, ay?"

"A pony."
"Thank you kindly."

Candidly I can no longer stand the shopping mall look Santa suit. The red fur and so obviously fake shiny beard just looks so damned absurd. I think it looks like a total joke and completely unconvincing.

I love the costume. For what purpose did you make it?
I played Santa for the first time last year for my work (Future Shop) in a cheap conventional costume paid for by the store (only forty bucks). It was light-weight, but the fabric didn't breathe and it was hot as hell. I remember going outside in a blowing snow just to cool off and felt fine out there while everyone else was freezing. I thought that I could have worn my own winter coat all day indoors and would have been more comfortable.

I found that I enjoyed playing Santa but vowed that I would only do it again in a better costume. Remembering last year I decided that I'd make the costume my own and more like an actual garment made with fabric that breathes for more comfort. My instinct was right as I could wear my own costume for hours without being unduly hot and uncomfortable. The outfit itself was a bit heavier weight than the store bought thing but it was much easier to wear for extended periods.

I like greeting folks and spreading cheer and jokes in public as well as around my neighbourhood, but I don't think I could take sitting with kid after kid for hours on end like in a shopping mall.

Making the costume and being Santa brought me a renewed measure of Christmas cheer while there are other things that are discouraging in my life.

But no way on God's Earth would any self respecting man were red fur, especially bright red fur!
