new 007 a flop??

You know, I haven't even seen Quatim of whatever...a friend of mine saw it and said it was better than Casino Royale...but the movie has just dropped off the face of the earth...did it tank at the box office, and if so, does this bode well for future Craig 007 movies???

According to rottentomatoes, after six weeks in release, it has grossed 161 million dollars, and is still playing in 1874 theaters.

That squares with my own anecdata. I went to see it a couple of weeks ago, and the auditorium was practically full.

So the answer to your question seems to be "no."

Good..because I am going to see it this weekend..I liked Casino, so I am sure I will like this too..

Yeah, if you check the weekly box office figures, it's still generating multi-million dollar grosses (low millions but still...).

I overall liked it but I'm hoping that now that the character is re-established the next movie can be a little more Bondian, even if it's more in line with the Fleming Bond and not the more outlandish movie Bond.

It's making money, mostly off of people's faith that it would be akin to Casino Royale - which it isn't. There's about 60 seconds of character development in the whole movie, and even that is mostly the Bond girl's character, not Bond himself. The tie in to Casino Royale's story is minimal and takes up about another 90 seconds. The rest of the movie is totally generic action and plot. A huge disappointment.

For Quantum, I had high hopes... I watched it and... well, nice action flick, but far behind Casino Royale. Something about the editing bugged the shit out of me. you just can't get focussed on the action scenes. it's just too damn quick ! This is what I liked about Casino Royale. Martin Campbell and Stuart Baird did a terrific job on this film. I hope they would work again together for the next installment.

Didn't care for it. I thought Casino Royale was much better. I'm not too surprised at it's slow trinkle of its box office receipts. It's a decent to good action film, but a bad Bond picture.

^Sounds like it's a lot better than the blah CR then.

If you didn't like CR, then you are going to hate QoS...

Baloney. QOS is so good it almost makes up for the Craig miscasting with terrific direction and style from director Forster, unfortunately undermined by that second editor (hired by the producers) to chop the movie into millisecond fragments. Still not really Bond (couldn't be with that Craig guy, who looks like 2nd villain from left or Felix Leiter after being kissed by a shark), but better entertainment than any Bondflick since LICENCE TO KILL, that's for damn sure.

Casino Royale was brilliant and so was Quantum of Solace.
Despite what people decide not to see in a story, QoS
has large amounts character development for Bond.
And this Bond is far superior to any of the previous Bonds.
Much more believable and intense. And it actually has an
actor worth watching.

Qos looks to fall just short of the US Box Office but is still coming out worldwide and should pass at least put another 50 million-ish in the kitty.

Here are the stats...

Quantum of Solace - Budget of $200 million
$161,664,762
$372,786,451

= $534,451,213

Casino Royale - Budget of $150 million
$167,445,960
$426,793,106

= $594,239,066

I've seen it advertised on the tv here, so I'm thinking that it's getting re-shown in the cinemas in the UK over Christmas. Either that or it's been playing continually since its release.

It's made $534,451,213 worldwide as of today... most certainly not a flop! :)

BTW, the movie kicks ass! Go see it

I would disagree. The journey taken by Bond in the film is just as important as any particularly introspective character moments are or would have been. The action is certainly not pointless, but rather each set piece contributes to the overall journey the character takes. It's certainly different from Casino Royale, but I'm firmly convinced that if all one sees in Quantum is "pointless action," that they're not paying enough attention to the film as a whole. I certainly took a lot more away from it than just the nifty action scenes! I gotta say that it was quite convincing to watch the journey of the Bond broken by the events of CR make peace with himself and Vesper by the end of the movie.

My sister's opinion of it is that if you took roughly 50% of Casino Royale's character development and story and 50% of Quantum of Solace's action then you'd have a good Bond movie.

I'm not really sure how people can say that QoS pales in comparison to CR. QoS packs plenty of development, both in the character of Bond and his relationship with M (I absolutely loved their brief exchange at the end of the film). And it did all of that in forty minutes less than CR, which felt a little bloated and could have used just a little trimming in the final act.

It also has a better villain. I still wouldn't rank Dominic Greene as one of the top villains, but at least he was actually a threat to Bond, and displayed some actual control and authority over the story. Le Chiffre was about as menacing as a newborn puppy, and spent the entire film fretting over the debt he had to settle.

And I know I'll be in the minority with this opinion, but I think that QoS also had a superior Bond girl. I found myself caring more about Camille and her quest to avenge her family than I ever did about Vesper and her quest to...er, betray Bond. And all for a supposedly kidnapped "boyfriend" who was just using her anyway.

Both are excellent Bond films, IMO, and Daniel Craig is really doing a great job with the character. My only qualms about both is that the action is a little too Bournesque, and I'd like to see the camera pulled back a bit, with just a few less cuts next time.
