Elder Scrolls Oblivion Help!!!

I've bought somebody this game but they're not as good at these types of games as others so i'm wanting to help him out a bit at the beginning so he can enjoy it a bit more which is where you guys who have played this game come into it.

I want to do this as quickly as possible. I want to kill Umbra and take her armour and sword but early on she can pretty much kick your arse in 3 blows and standing on the ledge with a bow and arrow will either not work so early on (due to lack of skills) or will take forever (as in several hours) to kill her so I want to buy the Apothesis (sp?) staff weapon (33% Shock, Fire and Freeze damage) to kill her which will kill her very quickly but it costs about 5500 Gold coins.
I need to make about 5500 Gold coins as quickly and as easy as possible so I can buy the staff and kick Umbras arse so does anybody have any ideas how I can make that money fast without cheating?

After i've got the armour and sword i'm going to have him do the Mages Guild recommendation quests first so he can enter the Arcane University and enchant his armour. Using Grand soul gems and Umbras soul trap sword i'm going to have all his armour enchanted with the Shield ability (I can purchase the Shield spell from the Anvil Mages Guild which will allow me to do that).

Once he's got the Umbra armour and sword and his armour is completely shield enchanted the rest of the game should be a piece of cake for him.

The only thing standing in the way is buying the Apothesis Staff weapon. I need these 5500 Gold pieces easily and quickly. Also that staff weapon will come in handy for the recommendation quests.

Please help.

PS: I know you're probably thinking well why did you buy him the game and you should let him play it without help but let's please not get into that. The game is good when you know what you're doing, if he struggles with the game too much he'll stop playing it, with a little help to begin with I know he'll play it all the way through.

I would suggest www.Gamefaqs.com for help. Or a strategy guide. The strategy guide is really helpful for a game like Oblivion. It's not cheating when a game is that huge.

I had no problem with her. But I was fairly high level, and was an Assassin with a ton of sneak and sneak attack. So I got my best bow and GANK! GANK! GANK!. Although you want to get the quest for killing her first because if you don't then you can't complete the Daedric Shrines chain. It'll hurt your karma if you want to be good but the items, exp, and the final reward are so worth it.

It's ok i've got a plan, I've got a list and i'm going to loot specific ruins for Valar stones and Welkyd stones, I can get at least 500 coins for each Vala stone, i'm also going to loot all the Mages Giulds for all their tripod things and mortar and pecils and soul gems which can get me like 50+ coins each. I should have 5500 coins in no time at all.

Then I can buy the Apothesis Staff (best weapon in the game) kill Umbra, take her shit, soul trap beasties and enchant the armour after completing the mages guild recommendation quests.
I just remembered too, I can also enchant rings and pendants with the Shield ability.

Piece of cake.

Have a read through this.

At a low Mercantile level, you will not get what those things you steal are worth and you may get a bounty on your head unless you are very careful. In addition, if you are not a member of the Thieves Guild you won't be able to sell anything you steal anyway.

These days I would just use the fact that I've got a set of clothes enchanted to 100% Chameleon. :D

At low mercentile I can get as much as 50% of the actual price of the item, that's why I know i'll get 500 coins for a Valar stone worth 1000.

In addition, if you are not a member of the Thieves Guild you won't be able to sell anything you steal anyway.

That's not hard to join is it? all I need to do is beat 2 other people at stealing that thingy majiggy and i'm in.

It's hard for me to remember how difficult things were at the start. I've been playing the game in bursts for two and a half years. My massive self-driven quest to get 100% Chameleon is finally complete which is making the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood stuff ridiculously easy.

I had to get Azura's Star (the reusable Grand Soul Gem), an Illusion skill of 75 (to be able to enchant an item with 20% Chameleon), a Conjuration skill of 100 (in order to be able to cast Summon Xivilai which have Grand Level souls for me to take) and sufficient money to pay to enchant the clothes (which was a lot).

No, it's not hard. I'm just wondering how early in the game your friend is.

I just got out of the castle sewers. So, I'm right at the beginning. I went with that funny lookin race with the affinity for magic since I like playing casters in other games, good choice or should I reroll?

^I went with a Breton. I too prefer magic.

Ya, a Breton, that's the one I rolled. I only fought the easy stuff in the sewers so far and don't think they're an accurate gauge. Cool game so far though.

I've done well with my character since. I've had no trouble completing the main, Mages Guild, Dark Brotherhood and Arena questlines. Still working on the Thieves Guild and the Fighter's Guild (got kicked out for stealing from them and now I have to go find 20 Bear Pelts).

Having another snowstorm today, so I might get to play a bit more, hopefully.

I completed the entire game back in 2006 but ended up losing my save data at one point and had to start again, wasn't as good the second time around.
I missed my Spellbreaker shield and Shield enchanted armour and my uber enchanted sword that could drain and damage almost all the health on the opponent with one strike. :( I also had a fireball spell that could clear an entire room with the loss of lots of my magica. :(

Those were the days.

I highyl suggest you pick up the bible sized Oblivion guide as a side gift for your friend ;) Its really well done and gives you the answers to just about any question. That or you can bookmark gamefaqs.com

He won't need a game guide, he'll have me. ;)
It's the whole combat system he'll have trouble with, he's more used to games where you shoot guns from afar ;), that's why i'm giving him a small helping hand at the start.

Oh and please nobody mention lowering the difficulty slider. That is NOT and option.

Oblivion is a pretty tough game. I had a lot of difficulty with it, and little fun, until I caved in and moved the difficulty slider a little to the left.

I had quite a good time with it after that.

You made that so much harder than it had to be. Just get some grand sould gems and turn them into black soul gems then soul trap some bandits (which are everywhere.) You only need 50 illusion by the way to cast chameloen.

I recently picked up oblivion as well.
I have to sadly admit, I have barely touched the stack of brand new games I have because of it.
I am having a ton of fun with it. It's very, very addicting (and time consuming).

Although I'm no expert on the game I am up to level 23 and JUST beat Umbra.
Yes the sword and armor are cool but my suggestion would be to play the game naturally the way it was meant to be played, you friend will have a lot more fun that way.
It's not a game meant for you beat in a few hours.
