I wish my computer would break!

Do you ever wish something you own would break so that you would be forced to replace it?

My computer is a Sony Vaio. I bought it for relatively cheap 4 years ago because it had already been opened. It works fine. It's not amazing, but it's good enough. But I'm just so tired of it!

I can't justify spending the money on a new computer (I really want a new MacBook) right now because this one is still working, but if it were to suddenly break, I would be forced to buy a new one!

The other night I was sitting in my bed and fell asleep with my computer on my lap. Sometime in the night, I rolled around and my computer crashed to the floor. The crash woke me up and I thought, "Oh shit!" because I just can't afford it right now. But at the same time, I thought, "Ooh, now I can buy a MacBook."

The damn computer wasn't even phased by the crash. It still works just fine. Dammit.

I refer you to the words the immortal Rob Halford:

"Between the hammer and the anvil"

Craigslist works too.

I bought my new laptop about 6 months ago when I realised that the old laptop was impersonating a frying pan for days on end and acting quite slowly (it was 5 years old too). Only a few weeks later my old one broke down permanently. I call it expert timing. :bolian:

With my old computer (I had the desktop for about 4 1/2 years) and it was at the end of a 4 year warranty, so I said "screw it" and purchased a newbie laptop. Retrospectively, I should have gotten a macbook.... but I love my laptop now that I'm running an Ubuntu with all the snazzy 3D effects. I have two gigs of RAM, and where Vista hogged up some 35% of the memory while idle-- Ubuntu with ALL the special 3D interface effects turned on only uses 9% and it flies. Someday I'll get a mac, right now I'm pretty happy.

My advice: Do something fun w/ the computer you have. Install Linux or try and get it to run MacOS or something. Backup all your stuff and give it a clean sweep. It'll feel like a new computer.

Yes. Oh yes. For a couple of years, I was wishing that my car and computer would break. They did earlier this year :).

Let me borrow it for a week. It will come up with some mysterious problem it's never had before. I have some awful effect on computers where a perfectly functioning computer somehow falls apart soon after I use it.

It's pretty similar to The Gabriel Effect.

The MacBooks are so inexpensive. Do it!
Um...compared to what? :wtf:

Yeah, macs are pretty steep. Their bare bones model is a grand before the security package. However, I wouldn't recommend spending less than 1000k on a laptop unless you're looking at one of the cheap ASUS Linux devices. My mom spent like 400 dollars on a cheap laptop from Best Buy with Vista preinstalled and it's a heavy, bloated, hot machine with no battery life.

With a Mac, you're purchasing an OS guaranteed to run the way it was designed to and a nice computer for all the essentials (including some more demanding things like photo editing/storage, limited video editing, video-chat and DVD-watching). Considering all that, it's worth the 1k+.

Me? I have a Sony Viao that I run both Vista Business and Ubuntu 8.10 on. It's a good little machine with 2 gigs of RAM and a good graphics card, but retrospectively I would have been better off spending the 2k on one of the new 24in iMac desktop computers.

Oh, and I freaking love the Ubuntu 3D-desktop interface. It's amazing how much better Ubuntu is than Vista. I usually hate flashy graphics, but having all this extra desktop and shuffling through windows like a desk of cards is practical and very intuitive. Worth checking out!

I sold my PC (AMD 64 X2 4400+, 2 GB RAM, 320GB HD, 22" Acer LCD Flat panel Monitor, the whole megillah), turned around and bought a refurb iMac for the exact same amount of money. Now, since I bought the iMac for what I sold the PC, it isn't the newest model. However, it is a 17" Intel iMac 1.83Ghz Core Duo, 160GB HD, 1 GB RAM (I'll be adding), Mac OS X 10.5, and a SuperDrive, so I'm going to be very happy. This is my first Mac, but I was tired with Windows and it's inanity, so I made the switch. I've still got 8 days before my Mac gets here, and in that time I'm brushing up on how OS X works. I'm also having to post from my PSP (which hurts with how much I talk  ) or my mom's PC.

I can't wait for my new Mac, so my advice is to go for it!

J.

Yeah, my current Vaio was $800, and that was only because it was pre-opened. I considered it a pretty good deal.

With the magic of credit cards I could afford a good Mac. However, I am still paying off my $1200 TV from my Best Buy card. Maybe once that is paid off I will consider the new computer. One major purchase at a time.
