NFL Football - 2008-09 Season Discussion

As a Colts fan, this team has the look of the 2006 Championship team. Not identical, but they do have the look.

Luckily, we'll have plenty of time to get essential personnel rested and ready for a playoff run, namely Bob Sanders, Joseph Addai, Marvin Harrison, and Gary Brackett.

Can't wait to see how this thing turns out. I'm watching the playoff seeding intently...

Quick Fantasy Football question. 3rd string reciever.....do I start Derrick Mason against Cowboys or Donnie Avery against Niners.
Mason is playing against a defense that's been gaining momentum these days.

Avery is playing against an obvious (and it pains me to say this as a Niner fan) weaker secondary...BUT Avery is reported to have a hip injury. I figure he may have nothing to play for, whereas Mason and his Ravens are fighting for playoff spots.

Mason. :techman: *

* This message brought to you by a Ravens fan...

...however, the opinion is based on the fact that Flacco has had a couple of difficult games and my guess is that he will rely heavily on his favorite receiver to get him out of his slump.

Tough call- both are playing on teams that will likely fall behind (and thus be forced to throw the ball). I'd probably go with Mason, but with Dallas' defense coming alive lately, it could be a rough game for Flacco and the rest of the Baltimore offense.

This isn't meant to be spiteful or anything, but...

I don't think the Colts get very far in the playoffs.

I know in 2006 they had an atrocious run defense and managed to pull it together for the playoffs.

But this year, they have more than that counting against them. They can't stop the run, they can't run the ball, and Thursday night they showed to the NFL that even a mediocre passing attack such as Jacksonville's could beat them...and it nearly did, had it not been for Garrard's gift late in the game. If Garrard and a depleted Jags could put up 400 yards of offense on the Colts, can you imagine what a QB such as Jay Cutler, Big Ben, even Chad Pennington, heck even Matt Cassel with Moss to throw to could do?

Finally, while Manning indeed has a penchant for willing his team to victory, the playoffs shown us in most instances that for some reason that quality fails to manifest itself at that time, when it most needed.

The Colts are free to prove me wrong, and if they make it all the way I'll be surprised but have a great deal of respect for it. More than anything, this is the time for Manning, Dungy, and the Colts to prove 2006 wasn't a fluke.

Yeah, I don't see the Colts repeating 2006. They had a lot more going for them then. This year, they just seem to have Payton Manning. They have gotten hot, which was part of their key to success back then, but I don't think that's enough this time.

That's why this win over the Jags was significant for the Colts. They now have some time to rest adn possibly get some of their wounds healed. Addai and Sanders are potential game changera if they can get back to health. I don't think it will be enough, but it could help

No offense, but the Colts were anything but hot going into the playoffs in 2006. They lost three of their last four, all divisional losses, including to the Texans. The worst was the Jaguars 375 yards rushing in their win over the Colts.

Frankly, what happened in 2006 was that the defense managed to pull it together for the Super Bowl run. That's it. Hard to explain, but simple to understand.

Samus, I meant that the defense got hot in the playoffs, so, yeah, I guess it's not really comparable until you get to the playoffs.

I was going to say how terrible the Ravens run game looked, but I guess two massive runs late in the game means I can't. Defense sorta fell asleep there for a second, but any day where the Cowboys lose is a good day, so I'm not going to complain.

On Saturday, the Sixers beat the Wizards, today, the Flyers beat the Caps. If the Eagles win tomorrow over the Skins, it'll be a three-team sweep of Philadelphia over Washington. I wonder if that's ever been done before.

I like all the AFC playoff team except the Titans, I see the Colts beating anyone of them(including the Titans) except possibly the Steelers.

Regardless of what happens, 2006 was NOT a fluke. This team has been one of the top in the league or AFC for 7 straight years now, that was just simply the time they were able to punch it through. Now cap has hit them, age has hit them and throughout this season so has injury. If Manning hadn't still been recovering from surgery when the season started and Bob Sanders hadn't gotten hurt, I think they would still be contending for the division.

The Colts aren't a team that isn't good, they've just been doing this a long time and the run may be coming to an end. That's all.

What IS a fluke is the Titans, there's no way Kerry Collins is going to be this good next year, and the rest of the team is actually fairly lacking. If Jacksonville can get back on track they and Houston should be competing for the division title next season.

Holy sweet mother of fuck! Deion Sanders and Marshall Faulk should never be allowed in a broadcast booth again. I feel bad for Bob Papa, he's a good announcer and was surrounded by these two clowns. I like the way he basically ignored them as the game went on.

Again, lets not lose sight of the Lions and their quest for imperfection. They face a tough test today against a Saints team that has little to play for. Could this be Detroit's first win? Let's hope not...

This day has been an almost COMPLETE surprise so far. First the Titans smoke the Steelers, then the Patriots annihilate the Cardinals. San Diego convincingly smacks Tamapa Bay ... on the road. Miami and KC stage a track meet in the first half... all with a wind chill of like -10.

This is just ridiculous.

The Rams should do us all a favor and forfeit the final game, and disband permanently.

I have no bile left to spew.

I am in awe right now. I know it is only the first quarter, but Denver's defense looks alive. Absolutely fucking alive. And, I don't just mean that they are playing well, but they are flying around, they are hitting hard, they look like they are out there and having fun. I wonder if the return of Champ has anything to do with this?

EDIT- Of course, after a great start, RB Pope is injured and his return is questionable. Which means they are using useless Mr Bell.

Ah, I was really hoping to see what you would write on this game. It's just so unusal for you to be so subdued after a loss like this. ;)

Anyway, you guys deserved that game a whole lot more than we did. The players just looked flat out there for all but the final 4 minutes of the game. Hill couldn't get anything done, and the turnovers and mistakes just kept on piling on. I actually didn't watch the whole game because from the second to about 4 minutes left in the 4th, I thought the game was over. It just felt like a boring football game.

Then Morgan caught that pass and I was literally like "oh shit." I'm glad the Niners were clutch when they needed to me, but I would call this an overall disappointing effort.

I like the Rams, too bad they didn't smack San Fran on their asses.

Titans suck, as do Patties, good job Miami, sorry Bucs, Falcons game is
awesome so far, sweet win Saints, go Houston, can't wait for Panthers
to take the conference. :bolian:

Theme? Go southern teams!

Did anyone see the end of the Redskins/Eagles game? Six more inches and we might have had Baltimore/Pittsburgh all over again.
