What are fans' favourite producers of Star Trek toys and action figures? Myself, I favour Playmates.

I voted for Playmates if only for the fact I could FIND the damn toys at the local toy stores with more or less ease.

Mego!

I also enjoyed just going out and grabbing any Playmates toys I could find. However, I like the attention to detail that Art Asylum/Diamond Direct provides. A bit of an edge-out to Playmates.

All I care about is the ships, action figures do nothing for me.

All I saw from Diamond Select is action figures.(But I love the Battlestar Galactica toy ship)

I'm so tempted to make a joke about Playboy magazine right now...

But Playmates all the way for me. They didn't have the best detail and articulation like the Diamond Select/Art Asylum ones, but they were kind of like the original Star Wars and '80s G.I. Joe figures in that they were built for more rough n' tumble action.

I'm totally stoked that Playmates is doing a 3.75-inch line for the new movie. I've been wanting a Star Trek toyline back in that range since the ill-fated Galoob line...

I want Micromachines again but I believe Mattel bought them :(

Maybe Mattel will jump on the XI bandwagon and give us some. :)

For a long time, I loved the Playmates dolls--uh, I mean action figures. The only catch was getting to all the toy stores before the people with booths at the Trek conventions snapped them all up.

And I have to admit that Art Asylum's first run of Enterprise figures were off the beam, proportion wise. We got the figures looking like the actors were more than seven feet tall!

But over the past few years, the likenesses have gotten better. And they have me by the short and curlies since they've been producing figures based on my favorite Trek movie, The Wrath of Khan. (You gotta love a character who turns up the collar on the landing party jacket just to be cool:bolian:.)

Another plus for Diamond Select is that most of their stuff is sent to comic book stores. The comics distributor puts out a "phone book" called Previews every month that lists all the upcoming product and usually lets you see what they look like, though their ability to tell the release date lets us know they can't tell the future. :cardie:

So I have to vote for Diamond Select. It's cool to see what's coming in advance and only have to go to one place to get them all. :vulcan:(I used to love running from one store of Toys R Us to another, but I've aged somewhat and enjoy the convenience of the Diamond line.

But don't feel too badly about Playmates. I understand that the figures and props will be made by that company. I might still be able to order the Trek stuff at my local comics shop--Comics to Astonish in Columbia, Maryland, by the way-eliminates the need to do a tour of every toy store in the area in all kinds of weather.:borg:

Nostalgia dictates that I vote for Playmates. My first Star Trek related toys ever (1994: 4.5 inch Tasha Yar and Geordi LaForge in movie uniform - oh, and Data in the original, scrapped GEN costume design) :techman:

Nostalgia's got me on the Playmates side, too. I still remember thinking the TNG Phaser Type II was the coolest thing ever, and then flipping out when I saw it in Caldor one December. My mom refused to get it for me until Christmas, but then there it was under the tree. Pretty cool of her, I think.

Not to mention the Type-6 shuttlecraft ("Goddard") that could accomodate the action figures! Oh man, what a blast. Some of those Playmates toys were spot on!

Definitely the Playmates. I have several dozen of them and I had the Ent-D bridge set for a while, but sold it to make room. I was pretty ticked off that they switched scales before I could get an Ezri figure, and of course anything from First Contact, INS, NEM and Enterprise. The last one I bought was O'Brien from Trials and Tribble-ations a few years ago at a convention, $20 but I think it was worth it.

Diamond Select as well.

I have all of the TNG (season 7 uniform) characters standing on my main shelf on my desk. Even got the season 1 Picard and command chair to boot him out and sit the newer Picard in there.

Meanwhile, somewhere in the basement is my bridge set from playmates, and a basket of about 50 of the TNG/DS9 action figures....

Diamond Select figures are just so awesome! Just today I got the figure of Admiral Riker from AGT. Cool.

Although, I can't deny the fond childhood memories that the Playmates figures provided. I especially liked the commbadge-shaped display bases that came with the figures. When I was 12, I took one of those bases, glued a pin to the back of it, and wore it on my shirt for the entire summer, pretending I was a Starfleet officer.

Maybe that's why the other kids called me a nerd...

I like them both. They appeal to me in their own ways.

A lot of nostalgia exists for me with the Playmates line. They were produced when Trek was at its height in the 90s. They produced dozens and dozens of different characters from all the series. I was in high school and college in that decade and can remember grabbing all of them up. I loved the collector cards and pogs. They came with some neat accessories. The customer service people starting with Rich and then the fabulous Mara Hart were great in providing all sort of information to keep fans up to date.

DST obviously is superior in most areas such as sculpts. I've liked the figures they've released but I haven't cared for the heavy focus on TOS and the relegating of the 24th century shows to the sideline. I also miss going and purchasing them at brick and mortar stores. Now they are pretty much only available online.
