Was Ezri Dax a poor choice?

Yep, "Dax" should have appeared in ONE final episode.....as a man with little or nothing to do with Starfleet. Just to come back and tie up any loose issues and say goodbye.

Personally, I think the introduction of Ezri into Season 7 was a mistake. If they had introduced her in Season 6, with more time to develop her, she would have been much better. Ezri was way overfeatured in the first half of Season 7. It didn't help that we learned FAR more about Ezri in the first 11 episodes of S7 than we did about Jadzia in the first 6 seasons. Yes, we learned a lot about Dax, especially Curzon Dax. But the most we learned about Jadzia's past outside of being involved with Curzon is that her father was named Kela.

I didn't have any specific issues with Ezri though I think season 7 would have been better if she had not joined the crew on a permanent basis. We had 26 episodes left to wrap up the show and given the high number of supporting characters there were quite a few storylines to complete and adding Ezri who had to be introduced, explored and then wrap up stole time from the show. Also they would have saved some money from have one less actor, which at a stretch could have been used for the final episode so we didn't have to see so many reused battle scenes.

I have nothing wrong with the Dax character but maybe just have it for an episode or two. Have Dax return to the station and move her on to something else, which is what Trills are meant to do when they take a new host.

I agree with both of you. The first time I saw Ezri I hated her. I found her quite annoying, and missed Jadzia a lot. And then they continued to put her in a prominent role in what seemed like every episode, giving her more backstory than Jadzia ever had in six years! Total overkill, and I was worried that she would Seven of Nine the show.

That was years ago, and since then I've come to appreciate Ezri's character. Nicole deBoer was a much better actress than Terry Farrell, and even though I still like Jadzia, I like Ezri too. All of the nuances that Dax picked up were interesting, and I just wish that they'd been explored before the final season, where it all seemed to be taking up space. Really, Ezri could have left after Afterimage, with her story having been told and issues with Worf resolved somewhat.

Ugh, her arc with Worf in the Final Chapter grates a bit after all these years. They just seemed to be spinning their wheels a bit with all of the faux Ezri/Worf romance.

Strange is it not she wanted to leave so she would be on BECKER and it was on that show she was FIRED.

No it's not strange. She had a choice. Either stay on DS9 knowing that in a years time she would be out of work or go to Becker where she at least had the possibility of more then a years work.

If any of us were faced with a similar situation where we worked I suspect most of us would do the same thing and move to the new job to ensure our financial security for as long as we can.

If it was pure financial security she would stay on till the end. After the show, all she has to do is go to the Star Trek Conventions and she would have been set for life.

If we take Nicole (Ezri Dax), just to be on the show a single season and only 28 episodes she is set with financial security for life. She did not have to get on the show THE DEAD ZONE that only had a few episodes per year and did not have a strong market during the production years and has zero demand after it went off the air.

Nicole (Ezri Dax) must be so happy that Terry (Jadzia Dax) quit the show. Conventions, books, even this message board, has kept her name in the spot light within the marketing of star trek.

Terry (Jadzia Dax) hurt herself with the fan base because she went to Becker.

She does still appear at conventions, so she didn't need to stay at the end. Plus some people enjoy their work and want to continue doing it and getting paid for their efforts.

No matter what people do they will probably upset some section of the fan base. This thread shows that some fans weren't negatively affected by her departure at all.

I have to say I liked Ezri on the crew. It was difficult to introduce someone in the last season with so much going on, but having a less confident and confused character made a nice contrast - it would have been too easy to make someone similar, and although it's a sexist opinion I don't think a male actor could have pulled off as much empathy as Nicole de Boer did her more ditzy role.

There was one line I particularly liked with her, the accidental harshness of telling Bashir that Jadzia would have been with him if Worf never showed up. But she did help in finaly ending the lonliness we saw in Bashir, ending up being just as confused as Worf post-Jadzia and changed the Sisko-Dax dynamic to even more of a mentor.

It was nice to see a Trill family too, as most of the Trill-based storylines were about the about the symbiont relationship.

But I'm a little biased, seeing as I battled between Ezri and Ziyal to name my daughter ;)

She enjoyed her work so she left DS9 to get work on BECKER just to serve coffee to the most annoying and antisocial group of people because she felt she would get more years on tv.

Sure, she can go to conventions. But, it is hard for her to make it again in star trek after she was killed off. Nobody can write books of Jadzia post DS9, because she is cannon dead. No Captain Jadzia Dax, no Worf and Jadzia children.

When Terry left DS9 I understood something all the way back in 1998. There was never going to be a DS9 movie period. But, that would make a good new tread because Terry left.

She's an actor that's what they do. Depending on who you ask the most annoying and antisocial group of people would be Trek fans...so she would probably have been use to it.

Yet we are still talking about her and her character.

You can write about events pre-Jadzia's death. They've done it in a few anthologies. Plus given the rise of the Myriad universe novels you can still have her appear in an alternate universe. Away in Trek sometimes death isn't even really an obstacle...you have clones, holograms, time travellers, Nexii, genesis devices, reset buttons. If they wanted to the authors could arrange for Jadzia to return if it served a purpose.

I highly doubt that the death of Jadzia and the actress leaving was what stopped a DS9 movie.

1. Terry is free to work on any acting project and the people that want to have that project are free to hirer her if they want.

2. During the last season of DS9, it was confirmed she was killed in the mirror universe also.

3. True, the death of Jadzia and her leaving DS9 did not stop a DS9 movie. What I want to make clear is this. Terry and everyone understood as early as Season 6 that there was not going to be a DS9 movie. Season 6 was in the years 1997 - 1998, and it is more clear today there is little or zero interests to have a DS9 movie.

4. The only and only person that made out the best with the death of Jadzia Dax was then and even today was Nicole DeBoer (Ezri Dax). Before 1998, her role in the movie CUBE and her single season with a small Canadian sc-fi show that lasted a single season that had zero interests outside of Canada would just placed her into who are you talking about.

I really don't get what you're saying. Terry left the show. There's a new Dax and Nicole got hired. What does it matter? Terry can still do Star Trek conventions until she's tired of them. Nicole gets some exposure that she maybe wouldn't have gotten.

Do actors get paid when their character is in a book? No (at least I assume no unless they "own" the character). They get residuals of which Terry would get more because she appeared in more episodes (and would get more from Becker too).

Nicole DeBoer does not get anything if her character of Ezri Dax is written in a Star Trek book. Still, if the character of Ezri Dax is still current with only a book it does raise the stock of the character of Ezri Dax in the tv show of DS9. Since Nicole DeBoer did play the character of Ezri Dax on DS9, it increases her stock as an actor and being asked to show up for conventions (star trek or general sci-fi).

Ask this question, if you were going to have a Star Trek convention who would you want, Nicole DeBoer because of the amount of positive press about her and the positive character of Ezri Dax. Or, find someone that played a redshirt in TOS and having zero character development other then a change of the name of the redshirt and the countless amount of redshirts just ending up being killed in books.

Does it really? So Nicole is up to speed on Ezri's development on the books? Ask her a question about Ezri moving to the command track? Or the Destiny? I don't think being the book raises the stock of any actor except if the actor writes the book.

The fact that she was a main character on the TV series gives her stock. That's what people will ask her about. They might tell her that Ezri has grown in the books. However if someone told Terry that Jadzia was still dead in the books she'ld probably shrug and start talking about appearing with the TOS Klingons or whatever.

Clearly Nicole of course? She was a main character in the TV series. That doesn't cancel out anything Terry (and Jadzia) did on the show though.

I loved Ezri Dax, found her far more interesting than Jadzia.
Especialy considering she was dealing with Jadzia's memories
on top of her new life and her own life before recieving the
symbiot.

Plus she was cuter ;)

Very sure that Nicole Deboer is reading every single book that has been published since 1999. If not, her agent has been reading every single book. They do not want to have her character be undermined with a published book. Even Terry (Jadzia) has been reading every single star trek book. Also her agent. Both Nicole and Terry are in the same boat.

There is something that Nicole (Ezri) and Terry (Jadzia) would not do to each other. They would not co author a book or make official comments to debate who was the better DAX. They would be in a lose lose if they had a public pissing contest who was the better DAX.

She was cute and she did not need to use her breasts to make her more interesting to look at like Jadzia did :)

Ezri used her body more than Jadzia did... she spent like 3 episodes in her undershirt once...
