A frieghter's maximum speed

Thus Sulu and Scotty's comments might've been made with regard to a slow moving convoy speed that they thought the Diedre was a part of.

That's reaching.

"I'm well aware of a freighter's maximum speed, Mr. Sulu."

That's pretty clear.

Whether Star Trek works on these sailing ship rules, or on the rules of modern diesel-powered ships, is not immediately obvious from the episodes. It could be some sort of a happy medium, really.

The Warp drive seems to work in numeric increments. Impulse seems to be like in modern ships: "Ahead full" "One quarter impulse" etc.

With apologies for muddying the waters, check out "The Corbomite Maneuver", in the scene just before the Enterprise first encounters the Fesarius:

KIRK
Half-speed!

SULU
Reducing to Warp Two, sir.

Just after that is when the Fesarius seized the Enterprise with a tractor beam.

KIRK: Half-speed!
SULU : Reducing to Warp Two, sir.

Could just mean half CURRENT speed, or half current warp factor, have RELATIVE speed, etc... It's not a very definitive statement in this context, sadly.

Like I said before, the 'warp speed' formula came later (though it was used to be consistant later on). They probably meant 'half of warp four', assuming that warp was linear (which is something that crops up in even 'modern' Trek from time to time.)

No one bring up the bit where Riker orders an increase to Warp 6 and Geordi replies, "Aye, sir. Full impulse."

:shifty::lol:

I'd write in the PANDORA-CLASS Freighter / Transport at Warp Eight (at most) in the TNG-Era/Post-Voy-Era.

She's a multirole vessel. Think of a ship with the diplomatic, scientific & tactical capacity of either an Oberth-Class or a Nova-Class with Danube-Class interchangeable modules.

In the aftermath of The Dominion War & the Enterprise-E's encounter with the Reman Scimitar, (among other incidents too numerous to list here,) the Federation's "Starfleet Transport Command" & their clientelle decided it was no longer in their cumulative interests to allow their smaller starships to be fatally easy marks - speed, armor, personnel, or armaments-wise.

The Boomers' representatives agreed that Starfleet Academy could train their prodigal sons & daughters aboard these ships within safe trade routes located in the hearth of the U.F.P. Starfleet would reorganize prospective senior officers from within other departments bucking for promotion to supervise, while shaking out the bugs in the ship's patchquilted surplus / prototype systems, in addition to drafting proposals for new opportunities (holosuites, improved medical bays, quarters for families / singles, upgraded replimats, etc.) for improved quality of life for a new generation of "Boomers" within the Pandora-Class freighter's remaining internal volume, before marketing them to expected commercial interests over the next several years.

They put it before the CoE to find an easy to convert concept already in the mothball fleet, & they chose the Conestoga-Class as their inspiration & went to work. They stripped components of the Merchantman-Class & other obsolete hangar-queens from the ENT/TOS/TAS/TMP eras, added the few affordable ODN/EPS upgrades and then took nacelles from older, damaged formerly warp-capable (Federation & Non-Federation) transports (ie: Whorfin-Class) that had been towed home pockmarked from Jem Hadar bug-fighters' poloron beams & too extremely exposed to space to safely house a crew any longer. They upgraded the phasers & sensors to a Nova-Class / Oberth-Class level instead of blindfolding & tying a crews' hands behind their backs with low yield meteor-crushers against forces unknown, giving them a far increased chance of surviving to report to a trading station or starbase about unfriendly activity.

Sounds extraordinarily excessive for a freighter. Modular cargo, yes that's good, but giving it diplomatic, scientific and diplomatic capability wastes the ships space and power. Escorts exist for a reason.

Somehow, this seems like a bad idea.

Like installing flat tires on a new car.

It would be smarter and less foot-shooting to simply recycle the verterium cortenide in the coils and make new nacelles.

Jitty: They're taiking bits & pieces of equipment, armor, etc. from ~*everywhere*~ in the mothball & dominion war boneyards. The Verterium Cortenide is one way they'd do it, yes & make new nacelles in one ship in the production run of seven or eight ships in the production run to start. The Transport Command is hoping that "First Contacts" or sneak attacks from rebel Jem Hadar or the Orion Syndicate, & Ferengii raiders, etc. won't occur in the DS9 relaunch era in the Gamma Quadrant, but in the event they do happen, better safe than sorry.

Just so you know, the "Pandora-Class" I'm talking about is ~this~ one designed by Suricata & Kaden, for "The Breen War". I hate stats without illustrations, which is the case for a lot of the ships at Trek-RPG.Net, so here ya go peeps.

I was the head writer for TBW, and that doesn't look like any of the ships that we designed. :wtf:

Unless there's another "The Breen War" that had Suricata and Kaden on the team that I'm unaware of, of course.

EDIT: Sorry to take this further off-topic, but I had to express my confusion.

You're familliar with the more "ovular" / egg-shaped style design based on the un-named freighter from the game with the Typhon-Class carrier & Valkyrie-Class fighters ("Star Trek: Invasion") that Suricata & Kaden created later. This was the original prototype they initially started & scrapped as they weren't happy with this version.

No, but I don't recall any specific rules against posting custom stuff when it's relevant to the topic. Please, Vance, leave the modding to me. Thanks. ;)

The problem is that the 'custom stuff' is being posted as if it were answers to canonical questions. That's why I'm pushing like this. A 'fanfic' answer is not valid to the questions presented, at least without the clear caveat.

We need the custom stuff in addition to the so-called strict rules of canon, Vance. We amateur writers require something else to go on besides card game RPG & Dice game stats & whatever's at Ex-Astris-Scientia.

Maybe, but do not present it as 'definitive' as if it was either official or canon, since it's neither in any stretch of the imagination. When someone asks a question looking for an official answer, you simply don't respond with your fanfic as a source as if it were.

The custom ships / fan fic sources ~should~ be considered official as a lot of the freighters are going to be refurbished mothball fleet ships in the post-Voy / DS9 relaunch era.

Err... what?

I'm sorry, but most fanfic writers have even LESS of an idea of what they're doing than the TV writers.
