Rom Coms "Ruin Your Love Life"

My best friend and I have a game we play at Rom Coms called "spot the restraining order". It involves identifying the dramatic peak in the movie at which one or other of the destined soul-mates really ought to have gotten the police involved. There's one such moment in almost every one of them.

I love romantic comedies and watch them all the time. They can promote unrealistic expectations and it's something that should be kept in mind, especially if a person is already a bit of a romantic. I think it's silly to say they'll ruin your love life though.

Another issue I've noticed for unrealistic expectations comes from looking at other couples as a measure of your own relationship. Too many couples put on happy faces or exaggerate and leave others thinking there is something wrong with themselves since they are not as happy all the time.

Anyway, I won't lower my own expectations but I won't look to movies as a guide for them, either.

No, but his late wife and his current girlfriend are both psychic.

It was, however, somewhat disturbing when he was having a psychic affair with said girlfriend behind said late wife's back and said girlfriend appeared wearing said late wife's costume.

Hugh Grant's not enough of a reason ?

I don't know, Peter and MJ seemed to have a good thing going on until their marriage got retconned.

Reed and Sue seem to be doing okay.

You know I don't think I've ever seen one of his movies all the way through. I do remember wanting to gouge my eyes out after My Best Friends Wedding at a slumber party though.

I always said Mama Mia should have a special For Men edition that comes complete with an eye gouger.

Oh yeah Reed and Sue are great. She can walk all over him because he can't be bothered to pull his head out of well anything really. Actually reminds me a lot of some relationships I see with introverted and nerdy guys who suddenly have a girlfriend but no idea what to do with her so she claims ultimate power.

Why shouldn't we expect romantic gestures?

See, there's a reason I've had such an absurd number of girlfriends.


Now, it's a lot of fun when those 'Rom-Com Moments' happen in real life, but if people are actually expecting things to happen that way all of the time, I think that says more about them than the fluff films they watch.

Fiction in general promotes an unrealistic outlook on relationships in general, be they friends, family, or romantic partners. Most authors write for the world they'd like to live in without all the failings of the real one. What sounds romantic in one context is creepy and stalkerish without the fictional framework. That is why most romantic guys have such problems in their youth, especially these days. They think it is possible to win a girl over with romance, rather than embracing romance within an already formed mutual attraction.

I am not a huge fan of rom-coms, but I'm never tired of 'Notting Hill' because it's really comedic (and also for the happy ending, of course). Anyway, who expects that to happen to them? It's clearly food for the imagination only.
And period romance. I'm a bit of a sucker for that. You can't really identify there either, can you? Nothing wrong with a little dreaming. OK, I admit it, it makes me romantic. But what if it just puts me in the mood for love?

By the way, "My Best Friend's Wedding" doesn't have Hugh Grant. Leave a little bit of bashing for the other male romance actors. Like Matthew McConaughey, for example.
