London tourist tips?

You are also not allowed to take photographs inside Tube stations without prior permission from Transport for London.

I wasn't aware of this one. I don't think they take it very seriously... I've done it myself (with visitors) and have seen others doing it without comment.

I've started to see signs in a few stations and a driver announced over the train's PA system that photography wasn't allowed. It's probably some anti-terrorist thing.

The whole explosions paranoia just makes everything so much more difficult... the amount of times I've had to alter my journey just because somebody left a teddybear or handbag behind... Not to mention the lack of bins anywhere within a station or train (again for fear of bombs), which means carrying around dirty coffee cups and packets around in your bag. What a pain!

We did have a period of loosening up and respite in the gap between the IRA an Al-Qaeda. I wonder who'll be next after these guys... It's like a city under siege. We need a bit of a holiday, you know.

^The Daily Express will invent somebody else once TEH MUZLIMZS! are not a problem anymore.

How about Sweden ? How can you trust a nation full of blonde people ? :D

They trusted them to run the English squad, they are obviously trusted implicitly.

Sing song:
Sven Sven Sven,
Sven Goran Eriksson,
he's a lovely geezer but don't forget that he's from sweden.

Ah, we should trust the red tops to lead us then - they never liked Sven.

An alternative suggestion - what about the Dutch ? That Omnius guy looks pretty shifty if you ask me.

^ We run no risk from the Dutch, they'd want to find somebody to go Dutch with on the cost of the bombs. Far too busy squirreling things away. :p

You just made Bergkamp cry.

I have a vague idea of it being something to do with the fire detection systems, but as has been said, no one minds.

Its a standing piece of legislation, has been for donkeys years actually, that photography is not permitted without express prior permission on any British Rail property (and privatisations thereof). Its purpose was in fact security originally, because its important to remember that Britain has been fighting terrorism a lot longer than late-to-the-war-as-usual America (kidding, kidding, sheesh ;) ) and railway stations were always considered priority targets fro the IRA.

First of all, DON'T GO.

I hope we overcharged you for everything.

Seriously though, I've been in lots of the world's big cities and most of them are not really any different to London in terms of friendliness or attitude towards tourists. Tourist mecca cities like London are big places, full of people trying to get about their daily lives, usually under intolerable conditions, and tourists generally get in the way of that. As for costs, sure London is very expensive, but so are many other world cities. What did you expect - a cheap city full of people just dying to get to know you? It's London. You'll get the same in New York, Tokyo, LA, Paris or wherever. Some hide it under a veneer of politeness (I'm thinking Japan especially here), but basically it's the same in every big city.

Go there to see the sights.

Or to live & work there if you're a glutton for punishment (I couldn't do it! :D )

It's not always a veneer, some people are genuinely easygoing and pleased to meet you, difficult as that may be for a Brit to compute. :p
