Rom Coms "Ruin Your Love Life"

Says the BBC.

Watching romantic comedies can spoil your love life, a study by a university in Edinburgh has claimed.

Rom-coms have been blamed by relationship experts at Heriot Watt University for promoting unrealistic expectations when it comes to love.

Plus, they also give the unrealistic impression that Hugh Grant might not be a complete prat. :D

I think it's quite ridiculous to ask the nation to effectively drop their standards.

Why shouldn't we expect romantic gestures?

It's this part...

Many held the view if someone is meant to be with you, then they should know what you want without you telling them.

...that I found daft. Unless your name is Scott Summers, I doubt that is ever going to be the case.

If they had been watching the same rom coms, then they would know exactly what is required! :p

The solution obviously, is to force everybody to watch them.

We'd end up needing a special lane on the motorways to cope with all the people making a mad dash to the airport to catch up with their departing love interest.

The solution obviously, is to force everybody to watch them.

This would, unfortunately, have the negative side effect of making people watch films with Hugh Grant, Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lopez in them. This is unacceptable.

Well, there's nothing wrong with gestures, but expecting that your own relationship will start with a "cute meet," you'll instantly fall in love halfway across the country and your lover will declare his love for you on top of the Empire State Building is pretty dammed unrealistic. It puts too much pressure on the relationship and makes for a distorted view of what adult relationships are really like.

^ I didn't mean it quite as literally as that! I meant the huge bunch of red roses, surprise Valentines dinners, proposals on bended knee... that sort of thing. That's not too taxing if you think about it.

There's nothing wrong with any of that as long as it's not a one way street.

(And I don't mean the guy does that and then the woman tolerates laying there while he has sex on her if he does it exactly right :) )

You know, you oughta' have a pre-written message covering all this, to copy and paste as needed, just to save you all the repeated hassle... a lot of us know it so well, we could even write it for you. :techman:

It seems, sometimes, like others have pre-written replies to my posts so maybe that's a good idea.
