Simon and Schuster cuts 35 jobs

I feel sorry for new author Ann O. Nymous, forced to languish in obscurity because of a proofreading error... :D

For a time, I wanted to use S. A. Wright as a pen name, until I realized it would be taken as a pun, rather than Sophie Arete Wright, a name just askew of the name that mine would have been had I been female.

Just to be serious for a moment but do others not think maybe we should be showing support to Margaret Clarke at this time. I, as much as everyone else, is annoyed that Marco is let go but it must be hard for her to look at this thread abd reading the comments that this could be the end of Trek books and the otehr thread suggesting we should boycott Pocket Books.

She is suddenly thrust into the position of editing all the Trek books, and it si in her hands the future of Trek lies. I think the least we could do is send positive thoughts her way and that we are glad that someone who has a history of editing Trek books has taken over.

^ Those opinions have been the minority. People feel bad for him, I do too. I respect his contributions to Trek Lit, and since he's been involved for most of my time reading Trek Lit, I'm a bit nervous as I'm not fond of the unknown. But Trek has had many editors, we know it will survive, the boycott idea as has been discussed would be a bad idea and opposite of what we want... so if she's reading, I'm sure she knew that opinions would be across the board, but I suspect she'd agree with the majority/ conclusions that have come. Any discussion about Trek Lit dying is just from people who have just joined the thread- as has been answered many times- The 2009 schedule should be okay... and Trek lit isn't going to mysteriously vanish. :)

Knowing Margaret, I don't think she's going to be worried one way or another about what she reads here. To paraphrase C.J. Cregg, she finds us annoying, but not prohibitively debilitating.

;)

(Actually, I'm pretty sure it's just me and Mack she finds annoying.)

She's suddenly doing two people's jobs - double the work - so I'd certainly like to express support, cos that can't be easy either.

I've already e-mailed Margaret and offered any assistance I might be able to provide.

Sure, but...

She's not alone, though. Ed Schlesinger and Jennifer Heddle are still there, and when the workload gets frantic, certain projects and tasks will still go out to freelance editors. KRAD's not a permanent S&S employee but he's done lots of freelance editing for them, as has Dean Wesley Smith in the past.

Like many businesses, the move to more and more work being shunted out to people on short term contracts. This is how corporations save money on things like permanent staff amentities, vacation pay, medical insurance, etc. Save on a senior editor and divert the savings elsewhere.

so, Ed does NF, Marco did DS9, TTN and VGD. Margerat did/does TNG and ENT (and what else?). What does/did Jennifer Heddle do? and who does/did Klingon Empire?

^^Keep in mind that Star Trek is just one of the franchises that Pocket's media tie-in department handles. All its editors oversee multiple non-Trek projects as well as Trek projects.

What are the other licenses Pocket has besides Trek at this point? I know there's The 4400, CSI (though its just the original Vegas show now, right?), and a few computer games that I'm sure I'll remember as soon as they're repeated here. Am I right in thinking the Marvel license has also run its course by now?
