That is pretty funny. I have to admit though, I really liked Tom's performance in Tropic Thunder.

Tom Cruise was on Leno tonight. Maybe it was his hair, but for whatever reason I thought he looked like Milo Ventimiglia.

I'm serious. I thought Cruise was brilliant in Tropic Thunder, and it completely erased in my mind all the insanity of his films and what was in the news the year or two previous. I love Tom Cruise again!

He still looks completely out of place in the Valkyrie trailers, though.

I hear he's the only one in Valkyrie who doesn't even bother to try using a German accent.

But he really was VERY entertaining in Tropic Thunder. Really the best part of the film, IMO. :)

So all those British accents in the movie are "German"?

I dunno...I haven't seen the film yet. But the rumor anyway (and you know how THEY can be) suggests that the majority of the cast adds the "flavor" of a German accent while Tom apparently doesn't even make the effort. Kind of the way Costner played Robin Hood with a US accent some 15 years back or so. :)

  9. Tom Cruise was pretty funny in Tropic. That's about it though it was a fun glorified cameo so i'm surprised it actually was nominated. Especially alongside Downey Jr who was the real star of that movie.

^agreed. The HFP really only nominated him to get a star-studded event.

Wasn't Judi Dench in Shakespeare in Love for less time than Tom Cruise was in Tropic Thunder? And she won an Oscar for it.

I love the Globes ... 80+ horny Foreign Press Guys who always nominate buxom blonde American actresses whenever they can.

Yeah, I remember a big deal being made about her having the shortest amount of screentime for any "Best Supporting Actress" nominee or winner.

Cruise was hilarious in Tropic Thunder, he deserves the nomination.

Another actor I typically can't stand, but who I loved in Tropic Thunder? Matthew McConaughey.

My favorite things are that Dexter and Michael C. Hall got noms. Now win!!! Dammit!!!!

Everyone else is going the Col. Klink route? Oh lordy. :rommie: Well, I'll wait for DVD, mute it and put the subtitles on.

I hope they use the Chuck Bartowski approach.

Complaining about accents in a movie where they're speaking English instead of German?

Somehow I suspect the Scottish Russian submarine commander in Red October was perfectly acceptable to you.

I think Tom Cruise was funny in Tropic Thunder...but I think it's a bit overrated of a performance. We're only laughing because it's Tom Cruise in a fat suit, cursing. Yet we didn't nominate Martin for Big Momma's House.

RDJ was 10 times funnier in that movie. His character's ticks and grunts had more comedic wit than anything else I've seen all year.

I hope Sean Penn wins for Milk. He is so good in that. Slumdog Millionaire has to win best picture.

On the show front, I'm gunning for True Blood, but I know it won't beat out Mad Men.

A point I made to a friend recently where she complained about Cruise's non-German-sounding accent in the Valkyrie trailer (and also gave a shout-out to Kevin Costner's "Nottingham twang").

I believe the shortest onscreen time for any Oscar winner is still Beatrice Straight in Network. She essentially had one monologue. But it was a hell of a monologue!
