We're making a globe for our door (really!!!)

Hey, I've got a really crazy question, but I figure what the hell.

We're entering a door decorating contest here and work and we're in a "win or bust" mood. We decided that our theme would be "water" and we want to make a snow globe that can be put on our door.

We'll get strangled if we use actual water, so I'm thinking it's out and sealing the globe wouldn't be an issue, but we're trying to think of supplies we can make to make the snow globe. So far we're thinking:

cotton balls to mimic the snow falling
tinfoil or shiny material to make the base of the globe
a smiling picture of us to make the "ornament"

I'm stuck on how to make a fake globe or fake water. Any suggestions?

Why would you get strangled for using water? It's not like you're using much of it and it's easy to clean up.

Other than that? Rubbing alcohol or Hydrogen Peroxide -both of which evaportate pretty quickly.

It's a state owned building, and if we cause an unmonitored leak with the carpet and the records in here they'll kill us.

I can't sketch worth a darn, but we're thinking that the base would be 2D and the "globe" would be 1/2 of a clear plastic circle of some kind that curves out from the door.

H2O2 evaporates pretty damn quickly, maybe it's a viable alternative?

Oh, no! I just arged this morning that we needed to pull up our crappy carpet due to water leaks and the sprinkler system getting our files and carpet wet. I am NOT going to be responsible for making water related mess after all the arguing and bitching I did about "being responsible and watching security in the reading room." No, Sir!

Ok, here's my shot, nice and dry too.

Take your hemisphere and underneath it put a small fan, in the base of the 'globe' put small holes in a bunch of places. Put about 1/2 an inch of 'flakes' in the 'globe', and when the fan is on the 'flakes' fly about in the globe.

Flakes could be ground-up packing peanuts or instant mash potato flakes, or something similar.

In the base there should be a lot of holes, I would say pea-sized holes, and over that some type of screen so the flakes don't fall through the holes, but the air moves freely.

You could hide the holes with pieces of cotton balls as 'snow banks'.

Okay, we decided to just go with the globe idea next year. That way we'll have 300+ days to plan this sucker.

We got our stuff at Hobby Lobby at lunch today and we got half of the decorating done this afternoon.

If you can find a half globe that is clear, you can seal it on the back after putting in styrofoam (you know, as a kid you'd rub it apart until pieces fell off and looked like snow), and put one of those small motorized fans you'd get in something like a a kid's starter kit for elextronic repair, and put the fan in there, but drill small holes for the wires to go out and connect to a 9volt batter. The fan at the bottom will make the snow go up and fall.

Yeah, I'm keeping this thread for next Christmas so we'll know how to rig that sucker up.
