Quantum of Solace isn't registering at the US box as hard as it did elsewhere. Yes, its done great but pre-release with the buzz in Europe and records it set there it was predicted to blow past Casino Royal. Now it'll do good to do the same or just slightly better.
I think this is more a reflection that people realize the blandness of this Daniel Craig and his James Bond as Jason Bourne 2.1 just not being as good as Bourne...let alone a true Bond film. It took two movies but I think its hitting home with US audiences/fans that Casino was overhyped and QoS bears it out that much more.

Well that's certainly your opinion, we won't truly know until Craig's third movie. If that performs poorly or flops, then your assertion might have some weight.

Just getting on record early like I did with Superman Returns. How has that one played out again? ;)

It's important to note that Bond always does well in the overseas markets and especially in England.

This is kind of different. Casino Royale has been the most successful James Bond film financially and perhaps even critically. Superman Returns was received fairly well by critics (it has something like a 76% at RottenTomatoes, which is far from bad) and performed lukewarm at the box office.

Quantum of Solace hasn't been that successful as Casino Royale but it's not a flop either. Yes, it has had a mixed reception from critics but it's done fairly well at the box office. I certainly didn't expect it to pass Casino Royale at the box office since not many James Bond films have (if any?).

So yes, Superman Returns wasn't the huge hit everyone was expecting, and it hasn't garnered a sequel. However Casino Royale WAS a huge hit and it has garnered a sequel.

I am not sure how your smug remark regarding Superman Returns plays into effect here.

Not adjusting for inflation, Casino Royale was the highest grossing James Bond movie ever. But then, that's the case for nearly every James Bond movie when it comes out. (If you adjust for inflation, I think Goldfinger & Thunderball are undisputedly the top 2.)

Hold up, did flop come out of my keyboard? Not even dissapointment. Just saying its expectations were high after that superb European opening and its not keeping pace Stateside.

I wasn't going for smug, cheeky perhaps but not smug. Don't be upset.

It opened high in the US, and it has had a drop-off...what film doesn't drop off big-time after opening weekend?

Like I said, to most, Craig's Bond is seen as liked by most. He's had two successful films, at least financially, while the first is generally more liked than the second (it seems). I doubt now that people are suddenly going to begin disliking Craig's Bond. It's going to take more than a mixed received movie to do that.

Furthermore, I think the public's reaction to Craig's third film is going to be the real tell, as I've said all along.

And I'm not upset. I just don't like smugness.

Given Quantum Of Solace's supposed $230 million dollar budget I don't thik it'll be the success that Casino Royale was, but I don't think it's anywhere the end for the franchise.

Brosnan also had a strong outing. His first two were at the time seen in a nearly identical way as you've just described Craig's Bond. For whatever reason(s) D.A.D. left a sour taste, despite its success, in many mouths to the point where once he was described as the best since Connery he now isn't mentioned. And Craig is mentioned as "the best since Connery", not "as good as Brosnan", who after all was "the best since Connery" also.

Just an interesting observation

Cheeky!

Aren't you in Nashville? Are Americans even allowed to be "cheeky"?:p;)

I am. I'm just...cultured. :D

And I keep trying to figure out a reason why I'm able to forgive an underwater car (like in The Spy Who Loved Me) but not an invisible car. But I can't cite a rationale for it. That's just the way it is; the invisible car sucks!

Roger Moore - the man who starred in Moonraker and had villains with steel teeth - even called DAD's car over the top.

So when I ask him his opinion of the newer-model 007s, I'm not surprised that he waves the question off with his hand. But I ask again. ''Okay, I've seen Daniel's Casino Royale, and I thought it was bloody good! I saw bits of the Timothy Dalton ones, and I saw one of Pierce's and I thought that was a bit phantasmagoric — invisible cars! They went too far.''
