President-elect Barack Obama has appointed former Army Chief of Staff 4-star General Eric Shinseki as the new Secretary of Veterans Affairs!

CHICAGO (Reuters) – U.S. President-elect Barack Obama has selected retired Gen. Eric Shinseki, who clashed with the Bush administration over the number of troops needed in Iraq, to be the next secretary of veterans affairs.

Obama's announcement was made in a television interview taped on Saturday that is to be aired in full on Sunday.

Shinseki famously clashed with the administration of President George W. Bush over how many troops would be needed to stabilize Iraq after the U.S.-led invasion.

Shinseki served in the Army for 38 years and lost part of his right foot during one of two combat tours in Vietnam.

He served as Chief of Staff of the Army from 1999 to 2003.

Obama planned to announce the appointment at a news conference on Sunday that coincides with the anniversary of the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese airstrikes on the U.S. base in Hawaii that brought the United States into World War Two.

"I think that General Shinseki is exactly the right person who is going to be able to make sure that we honor our troops when they come home," Obama told NBC's "Meet the Press" in a clip aired by NBC News on Saturday.

"Meet the Press" moderator Tom Brokaw noted Shinseki had lost his job in the Bush administration because he said more troops were needed in Iraq than then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld wanted.

"He was right," Obama said of Shinseki.

Rumsfeld and then-Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz heaped scorn on Shinseki for testifying before Congress that several hundred thousand U.S. troops might be needed to stabilize Iraq.

Shinseki retired as the Army's top officer in June 2003.

In his retirement speech, Shinseki chastised those who display "mistrust and arrogance" in military leadership and warned against over-committing the Army.

Shinseki was born in Hawaii to Japanese-American parents. Obama noted their shared home state when describing the reasoning for his selection.

"He has agreed that he is willing to be part of this administration because both he and I share a reverence for those who serve. I grew up in Hawaii, as he did."

Obama's news conference is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST on Sunday.
Obama pledged during his presidential campaign to improve services for retired U.S. military men and women if he won the White House.

The news conference is his latest in a string of announcements of appointments to his Cabinet and other top administration posts.

Shinseki would need Senate confirmation to the position.
Others names that had surfaced as possibilities for the veterans affairs post included Max Cleland, a former U.S. senator who lost three limbs in the Vietnam war, and Tammy Duckworth, who heads Illinois veterans affairs department and lost both of her legs in the Iraq war.

I didn't like General Shinseki because he made it more difficult to build political support for invading Iraq.

By telling the truth?

In a democracy, it is virtually a necessity to lie in order to drum up and maintain support for needed combat operations.

World War II is widely considered one of the most necessary and noblest of conflicts that the U.S. has been involved in.

Yet the Roosevelt Admin. repeatedly violated the law and lied to the American people about their actions leading up to the war.

The fact that the U.S.S. Reuben James sunk with all hands by a German submarine was in fact engaging in combat operations against the German sub BEFORE being attacked to cite but one example.

Good choice. Shinseki is a good man. His beret idea stank, but he's a good man.

Rubbish. That itself is a lie. Anyone who says this, and believes it, is an arrogant fool, puffed up with unwarranted pride in their own good judgment, and with equally unwarranted contempt for other people's good judgment.

Hey, look everyone. A GWR thread about something related to Asians.

How shocking.

And not a single mention of "Clinton" in his Wikipedia article. CleverWombat will be pleased. :techman:

It is true to a point. In a democracy, it is a virtually necessity to lie in order to drum up and maintain support for unneeded combat operations.

Yes. But that's true of any regime. Nobody is more sensitive to public opinion than a dictator.

The Big Lie in his post lay in its claim that lack of support for "necessary" wars is a peculiar failing of democracies.

Wow, excellent choice. Someone who had actual good judgement on the war!

As someone who makes his living from the VA, I hope this guy knows what he's getting into.

The term "bureaucracy" doesn't really do it justice. It's an enormous behemoth that turns paperwork and red tape into an art form.

I didn't like General Shinseki because he made it more difficult to build political support for invading Iraq.

I find this comment particularly hilarious in its irony. Shinseki may have been a party pooper seven years ago. But if President Bush had taken heed to his word, then political support- both his own and for the Iraq invasion- wouldn't be hovering around 'zero' today.

Re: My hero General Eric Shinseki is appointed Sec. of Veterans Affair

Not necessarily.

It is quite possible that using a bigger force in Iraq would've cost the lives of even more U.S. soldiers.

More soldiers mean more targets for insurgents and more soldiers dying in accidents that are inevitable in a war zone.

How shocking.

Quite a few African-Americans were, to say the least, quite pleased that a fellow African-American just got elected President. It was on the news a lot.

Not sure why an Asian-American shouldn't be pleased that a fellow Asian-American has been appointed to that African-American's cabinet.

Re: My hero General Eric Shinseki is appointed Sec. of Veterans Affair

i have always admired shinseki. NOt only for telling the truth but also not taking the opportunities to sling mud at Bush and Co and rubbing it into their faces that he was right all along.

Truly an honourable guy and and my hope is that he does his best to look after his wounded warriors.

Actually, Asian Americans.

Much like yourself, I really don't know much about Asians who live in Asia. I am, however, profoundly interested in the affairs of Americans of Asian descent like myself who are born and raised in the United States.

Fascinating. He reminds me of Clyde Kusatsku (a.k.a. Admiral Nakamura).
