Leonard Nimoy on the new film

So he's lying and making up that comment from his wife?

It's one thing to say that Paid = only positive remarks but are we suggesting he's making up stories as well?

It's a bit of a red herring in this case - there's no evidence that Nimoy was paid to volunteer this endorsement. If he has any publicity clause in his contract, it would be specific. Getting in touch with a single fan website just to express some enthusiasm five months before the premiere isn't going to earn him a dime.

Meh. No matter what Nimoy and/or his wife think, the only opinions that are going to matter will be the moviegoing audience's as well as the studio's. They will decide if a #12 is made and what will likely be in it.


If nowhere enough people turn out and some of the reviews are harsh, the studio might think twice about keeping the film franchise going. Remember, NEMESIS almost killed it off and having ENTERPRISE do poorly on UPN and rank near the bottom of the Nielsens didn't do wonders for the overall franchise either.

Almost four pages of comments analyzing positive remarks from two sources that, shall we say, are very close to the film (Nimoy and his wife).

Goodness. Nimoy seems to like the movie. His okey-dokey doesn't make the film high art, it won't be at Cannes. But the man knows Trek, so the movie must at least feel like Trek. Well-executed Trek. Nothing more. Nothing less. Just what it had to be. Why the gnashing of teeth and dissection of every word? The man seems to be saying Trek is in pretty good hands with Abrams.

What if he had said in so many words that it sucked? What if he said his wife got up and walked out less than an hour into it?

That's a given, but I was real glad to read what Nimoy thinks anyway.

I'm more interested in what anyone who has seen the film thinks about it than in the opinions and expectations of those of us who haven't, including my own.

Even James Doohan in the summer of 1989 gave good word-of-mouth to TREK V, even though in later years(and at a big 1992 convention in my hometown coinciding with "Relics(TNG)")he gave it a "Big Zero" and confessed he thought it was a mess of a film helmed by a guy he had issues with.

exactly! you "get it"! that's the point i've tried to make that seem's to be escaping everyone here.of course nimoy would say good thing's about this film. to do otherwise would do nothing more than hurt this film's box office potential and nimoy would in essence be shooting himself in the foot.i don,t see why that is so hard for people to understand.i take no stock in what he said. i will see for myself in may!

If Nimoy were getting paid to promote the movie, he'd be doing interviews in magazines or on TV. Probably not sending 50 word emails to TrekWeb.

Now, I agree, Nimoy is not the most objective source in this case. But I'll tell you, if I publicly said my fiance loved a movie that she thought poorly of, there'd be consequences. You don't put words in your S.O.'s mouth, and risk making her look like a fool, to minimally boost your film. Not when you could just talk about your own reactions. Not when your career is effectively over regardless of the movie's success anyway.

I care even less about what Nimoy's wife thinks than I do about what Nimoy thinks, but I really can't understand the assumption that he's lying.

i'm simply saying that i don't put much credence in the obviously biased opinion of someone involved in this project.sorry, but my opinion is every bit as valid as your's. this is not a court of law , but rather one of public opinion.therefore there is no "proof" that i need present. you "prove" me wrong! we will find out the truth in may. simple as that.we will have to agree to disagree.

Shatner also likes the new Enterprise redesign. Combine that with Nimoy's and his wife's fondness for the film and how it turned out and they give me hope that maybe 90% or more of my fears will end up being unfounded or exaggerated and I can live with the new look. After all, Shatner and Nimoy WERE STAR TREK for a long time. The epitome of the franchise, and still are in some fan circles. If the original James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock can find great things to say about the Abrams movie, maybe I'm just being too muss of a worrywart and fussbudget.

How someone can put so much meaning into 'Liver Long and Prosper' is great! Nimoy is the best Spock. What a pity he couldn't be rejuvenated for another 40 years.

well of course he's going to say it's wonderful. what's he going to say... it suck's?

He does not have to say anything - and unlike some actors, he's perfectly able to restrain himself in that regard.

Anyway, I figure since all of us get to vent our largely-uninformed-and-anxiety-ridden opinions here on the Internet on a daily basis it can't do any harm to bring attention to the opinion of yet one more person who's actually seen the movie and who's invested, um, a little of his life and professional reputation in the Franchise.

Oh, come on now. Nimoy's association with Trek, as well as his earning power in regards to it, has weathered some seriously tough times. It's a bit of a faulty premise to say that because he's invested in the franchise it should automatically be assumed that his opinion is honest and not marketing. And besides I notice that his comment says exactly the same thing we've heard over and over - grand scope, exciting, character moments. Everybody's "on message" as it were.
