Blade Runner #1 sci-fi movie

I have a dark suspicion that the fifty best SF films would be the same as the list of all the genuinely good SF films---and it might still have empty spaces.

In the sense of SF films that even people who don't care for the genre should still find real achievement? Metropolis, Things to Come, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Star Wars, Solaris, Stalker, 2001, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, ET, Alien, Blade Runner, possibly Forbidden Planet, GATTACA, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, THX 1138, Invasion of the Body Snatchers all come to mind.

PS In movies, the trappings are the style. Style is important. Having all the crazy stuff supposedly due to natural causes makes it science fiction.

Star wars is also sci fi

No, the Star Wars movies are not.

Science Fiction is about speculative futures or technologies that we, the human race of Earth, may experience. The plots focus around these speculations and often use them to comment on current social conditions. They can be serious dramas, comedies, actions or adventures...but they are always about us.

Star Wars is in no way about us. It's galaxy far, far away, a long time ago, might as well be Lord of the Rings or Conan, just with laser swords instead of steel ones.

Star Wars is space opera. There's no science to speak of in the movie. It's a classic fantasy with sci-fi trappings.

Hand and other limb replacements, androids? That's science and technology

That's the empire strikes back. Star Wars is a fairtale in which long ago, an old wizard, the chosen one and their comedy sidekicks head off to rescue the princess from the castle of the wicked wizard.

Star Wars is science, your interpretation is so prejudice....why the hell can science not be about other beings from other worlds? What you said was totally flawed and wrong. What you said means all the movies on the list are not science fiction

Episode 4 has light speed as well, science fiction there

Blade Runner is overrated crap. It's an awesome film to watch, however, if you suffer from insomnia.

and? the point about science fiction rather than having the trappings of science fiction is that those things something to the plot. It makes no difference to the story if they use horses or light speed.

Who says that is all what science fiction is?

It can be whatever you want it to be - but the fact that Star Wars is a fantasy rather than a sci-fiction film with a big S seems pretty clear to me.

I must respectfully disagree.... Two nights ago, I noticed that Blade Runner was on TV. It was about halfway through (somewhere close to the big Deckard/Rachel "KISS ME!" scene). I've seen the movie many times and I have copies on VHS and DVD..... and it was REALLY late. Still, I found myself captivated.

Long story short, Blade Runner only served to make my insomnia worse.

Every other movie on that list is about humans who are on or originated from Earth. Science fiction is about us. Again, Star Wars is not.

Even Battlestar Galactica...SPOILER...even though it technically takes place in the past with people from worlds far away, is ultimately about Earth.

Explain the theoretical science behind the Force or lightsabers.

Science fiction is a broad genre of fiction that often involves speculations based on current or future science or technology.

it is not what you say it is at all

You don't know when Star Wars takes place.....so you can not say it is not science fiction

star wars IS sicence fiction

Also, no way Aliens beats Alien. Right positions, but swap em.

Thank you. I thought I was crazy.

Every time I see Aliens more highly rated than Alien I go into a Nerdvulsion.

Aliens is a great, great film - don't get me wrong. But Alien is and always has been the superior film. Both belong on the list, but Alien should be on top.

blade runner is one piece of boring sh*t

Actually, for all its flaws, it's a very good movie.

In fact, all the movies on that list are very good.

Are they the ten best? Who can say?

All I know is--there isn't a single "piece of boring shit" among them.
