Destiny Opinions - No Spoilers

So I'm going to read the Destiny books over Christmas and have been avoiding all the threads because of spoilers, but have to admit curiosity is getting the better of me and I'm wondering: Did they live up to the hype? Are they brilliant or just merely good?

Please don't post any spoilers :)

I think they're great... what have you read up to now? I mean of other ST books.

I thoroughly enjoyed them all. There is some wonderful writing and worldbuilding in these books.

Very well-written. Depends what your tastes are in Trek stories as to whether you'll enjoy them, but I think they're well worth picking up. I'd probably go as far as to say it's one of the most compelling Trek stories I've read.

I read them all in fairly short order. Even though I didn't entirely agree with the direction the story took, they were pretty hard to put down.

They're great. Like I just said in the Mere Mortals thread, they do meet all of the hype that has grown up around them. Well, the first two at least, I haven't read the third one yet. But judging by what people said in the review thread, I think the same will be true for it too.

Simply put, some of the best trek lit ever. I found it difficult putting the books down.

I only have book 1 so far, others are on the way, so I'm also avoiding the spoiler threads.

I also had problems to stop reading, for me this is special because:

I'm not a fast reader, and I dont get "sucked" into a book quickly.
English is not my native languague, and somehow that takes a bit more energy to read.
I normally only read a book when I'm in bed and need to relax a bit before I'm going to sleep. But I found myself reading this book even during dinner.:)

I'm really looking forward for the other 2 parts.

I was getting burned out hearing about Destiny from over excited posters here, at one point there were 3 "spoiler" threads on the books before they were even published, so in spite of the awesome track record of David Mack I just wasn't thinking I was going to be into them that much. Turns out they were awesome.

They were okay, over-hyped in my opinion but okay. There were certain sections that I had no interest in so I skipped over a fair bit of the entire story as a result.

Same here.

To me, for what was supposed to be some sweeping epic that changes the Trek universe forever they lacked that epic feel.

Not enough battles in detail to make the Borg threat clear.

Lack of focus by having too many characters to service.

Yeah.

For an epic trilogy that was going to change the Trek universe, I expected a plot that had more depth and in which the familiar characters played a more meaningful role, characterization that was a bit subtler, and a more surprising ending that would demonstrate the extent of the changes in the universe rather than telling us "Things are different now!" and leaving it to later books to show how. But for all that the trilogy is very readable and clearly the product of a lot of effort on the part of the author and editors. And most people are in hyperbolic raptures over it, so what do I know?

What I have read of Destiny (Gods of Night and Mere Mortals) I really rather liked even though I found MM a real slog in parts (due to having a massive cold last week) and it took me just over a week to read.

My copy for Lost Souls is ordered through my local indy bookshop and I may get it by the end of the month, but not 100% sure.

I'm not a fast read either. it takes a long time for me to read a book. I had a hard time getting into Enterprise: Kobayashi Maru. I read the first chapter and had to put it down. I then started TNG: Greater then the Sum, got into that no problem (good book as well), then went back to KM and was able to read it and finish it.

I really thought the first 2.5 books were nothing short of brilliant. The last half of Lost Souls really ruined the entire series for me.

I think they have something for everyone- in that there is the drama/character building which some prefer, the action/adventure for others, the suspense/danger for others. Of course, they can't be one or all of those things all the time. But there is plenty for everyone, and there is little if anything that I'd cut... nothing comes to mind really, even for characters that bug me like Ezri and Troi- other people like them, so that'd be selfish of me. :)

And it gives us a look at what the Federation will look like in the future. There is sadness, joy, fear, indignation- the whole gauntlet.

I think they're worth it (and I'm pathetically cheap), and the end of LS is, I imagine, to set up for A Singular Destiny in 2009 which if memory serves, KRAD is writing.

Ignore the hype, consider your interests, read book one, and see what you think and if you want to continue... up to you and your personality in the end.

I did not think they were very good at all.

But I bought them out because of the hype.

Lack of focus by having too many characters to service.

One of the great things about the Destiny trilogy is that they are paperbacks and not hardbacks.

Wow... that's three slams in one thread from Dayton3! David, you really hit this one out of the park!!

I don't think the last one is a slam. Dayton3 seems to be responding the Marie1's comment about the books been worth spending your hard earned cash on. Hardcovers are bloody expensive (a rip off if you ask me) and its a fair comment to say that the novels been paperback is a good thing because it lessens the impact on consumers' pockets.
