Should the Jurassic Park franchise be retired?

if there is one word I dont want to hear in 09, its "reboot" or "semi reboot" or any kinda wishy washy, "its a reboot but the stuff from the other movies only kinda counts", and "but not the events of 4, 3 & 5 count but not 4"

Its either a reboot or it isnt, and if its a reboot it better had not been of something I have seen before.

Well, If you have not read the book, it would make a very different film/miniseries if it was adapted more faithfully. I would love to see HBO tackle it, I've thought of that before actually.

My friends and I have occasionaly discussed remaking Jurassic Park to be closer to the book. I think it could be excellent, although its not an essential project, because the original is still a wonderful film. As for the franchise, sure, JP3 sucked really badly, and The Lost World was a significant step down from the first one (which is probably my favourite film of all time) but I'd like to see them have another crack at it.

I've heard the idea mooted of a return to Isla Nublar, which, as a fan of the first film I'd be really keen to see (although it was napalmed into lifelessness in the book). I don't really want to see dinosaurs on the mainland though. Parts of Jurassic Park have always been about the beauty of seeing the creatures in their habitat, and I don't want to miss that. And, as far as I can see, dinosaurs, while awesome, just aren't threatening enough to really work as scary on the mainland. Sure they've got claws and teeth and are big, but, you know, the army. Even the police could deal with them. I think it would be contrived. And don't get me started on this military dino-riders bullshit...
 
I'd only really want a 4th if they can bring back most of the original cast- Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, Luara Dern and Richard Attenborough for sure. Then having a grown up Joseph Mazzello & Ariana Richards would be nice too

The thing with movies 2 & 3 is they felt more like spin-offs than sequels

Dear god, if they made a 6-7 hour movie of The Lost World that would be the most boring thing ever on TV, and that including The Golf Channel. I can not stand the second book.
 
Literal translations of Crichton's books are not a good idea. They did that with Sphere, and the results clearly showed why different media require different approaches to storytelling: great book, boring-ass film. Jurassic Park is a stand-out example of both the book and the film being awesome stories without the need for a blow-by-blow transcription to celluloid.

I'd love to see more Jurassic Park. The third movie was, indeed, a disappointment, but I'm more saddened by the idea of never seeing those amazing dinosaur effects onscreen again.

A splendid argument for doing a proper adaptation of Doyle's The Lost World! Sure, there are problems with plot structure there, but nothing that couldn't be ironed out.

And when I said that JP should be rebooted rather than remade, I only meant that certain small aspects, such as the John Williams themes and some logos and art design, should be re-used. Same Visitor's Center, for instance, with a different cast.
 
I find it interesting that some people want a direct adaptation of Crichton's books. The first book wouldn't be too difficult, and I think a miniseries with a high SFX budget could get it done. The second book is a tricky animal though. I think it's interesting that Crichton was pressured to write a sequel, something that he knew was optioned for a film before he even set pen to paper. Yet the end result is a very ponderous, largely unfilmable novel. I'd say it might just be his most philosophical book. And while it has some pretty good action sequences in it, it's nowhere near as relentless as the original.

I mean, I'd love to see a ponderous, thinky adaptation of The Lost World. With a lot of scenes of characters talking and watching the animals. But it would be a very different sort of film.

Given how HBO loves to cut off its more expensive shows after two seasons, this could work quite well, telling them up front S2'd be cheaper! :rommie:
 
Cancel Jurrasic Park, and move onto Jurrasic Park: TNG, where the humans get on with the dinosaurs in order to fight terrorism.

Considering what sequals we got, Jurrasic Park should have left as the fun romp that it was.

Yeah that'd be ok. Certainly the book has some interesting stuff in it that would work on tv as well. I like the fact that Hammond is a greedy old bastard, for example, but one problem of doing the translation is that the first couple of episodes would have hardly any dinosaurs in them. That'd be ok for fans of the book, but the world and his wife have already seen "Jurassic Park" the big-budget thrill-ride movie event, and therefore the mystery and suspense would be a bit lost on them. That problem might be especially acute if you use the same motives from the original film (although I do love them so)
 
No. But let's retire this trend towards idiotic concepts - like the now hopefully defunct 'Jurassic Park IV - Dinos with Freaking Lasers on Their Heads!' or whatever the silly plot was. One would think that it would be impossible to screw up a well-funded dinosaur movie, but films like JP 3 proved that wrong.

The problem is Crichton's Lost World was written as a sequel to the movie version of Jurassic Park. Any faith adaptation of both novels cannot claim the second movie as a sequel to the first without dealing with continuity errors.

Love the idea though.
 
I too would like more JP, but not if it's like JP3, which was woeful. It also left a problem for 4 & 5, in that they have toi resolve the pteranodon issue.

You know, if The Pacific (sequel miniseries to Band of Brothers about the U.S. Marines in WW2) ends up being successful, I could almost see something like that happening. Joseph Mazzello is playing one of the starring roles in that series.
 
Sam Neil is done with the series unless it's about T-Rexs destroying all Walmarts. i kid you not, he said that himself. :)

Money is not beneath Sam Neill, because he even accepted a paycheck to play the antichrist in a cheap horror film. :rolleyes:
 
The JP franchise is tired and has no story left so please let it end...Wait 20 years and remake it but no more direct sequels please.
