The Correct Way to Feel About Star Trek XI

When it came time to recreate and recast Star Trek, Roddenberry did it by creating TNG. He could have recast the original parts for TMP. He didn't. He could have recast them and done a new version of TOS instead of TNG. He didn't.

TNG was created while the old crew still was making money at the cinema box-office.
Broadening the franchise = more money.

TNG wasn't his original plan for a second series. Phase II was. TMP was done instead of that. But, I don't recall hearing that Roddenberry had any plans to recast the TOS parts when he wanted to do Phase II.

Shatner and Co. were already starting to get up in the years by the time Trek IV came along. He could have done Phase II after Trek III, which most people hated, and brought in a new cast at that time. Instead, he stuck with the original cast for 3 more films and went with TNG for the series.

How, exactly, is Trek being turned into Star Wars by Abrams and his team?

Well, we could start with the first few seconds of the trailer. I had feared that when Abrams admitted he was a Star Wars fan rather than a Trek fan that we might see a pre-pubescent Kirk with pod races through the cornfields of Iowa. Instead, we get a pre-pubescent Kirk racing a 300 year old car through the desert trying to escape a cop.

We then attempt to relive the initial strife between Han Solo and Luke Skywalker with Spock and Kirk (with Spock apparently being the young Jedi not quite in control of his skills and Kirk the brash officer with a quick temper).

A pointy eared alien that will die to empart his knowledge on a younger one in need of guidance.

Throw in $150m or so in phasers and special effects and you could have pretty much any of the last four Wars movies.

I dunno.. Sometimes I get a distinct John Cleese vibe off of him. John Cleese was a practicing attorney at one point.

I can't decide whether I just watched the Colbert Report or Alan Shore's summation on Boston Legal.

Either way

DAMMIT!

I had the perfect cartoon for this thread and I can't find it!

It's by Australian cartoonist Patrick Cook.

Two groups of people waving placards are viciously tearing into one another in an approved humorous style.

The placards on one side say 'PEOPLE AGAINST FOR'.

The other placards say ... 'PEOPLE FOR AGAINST'.

I saw Quantum of Solace again on Friday while I was away for the holiday. The print I saw had a Star Trek trailer attached, whereas the print I saw the first time did not. I had one opinion of the trailer and movie when I saw the trailer online, but seeing it on the big screen started to change my opinion.

I went through the remainder of the weekend frightened and confused. After reading this thread this morning, I now feel safe and secure, knowing that Cogley is doing the thinking for me.

Cogley for the win.

Star Trek XI is Star Trek's only hope to survive the next decade.
I think everyone is taking this far too lightly.

It was recently pointed out that our reactions to this movie (long before we get the full film) has the possibility of causing a collapse of the fabric of our civilization. Censorship, slavery, mass famine and a final fallout that would be worse than both nuclear war and global warming combined are what we few face today.

We are not just faced with the possible end of Star Trek as we know it, we are heading straight for the extinction of the human race!

I'm not going to suggest how you guys should feel about this movie (which we haven't seen) or how those who already have opinions based on what we have seen should feel. No, I'll leave that to each of you to wrestle with on your own. Just know that your decision (what ever it may be) will make the difference between a bright future for tomorrow or plummeting to the darkest depths of despair in the abyss.

The balance of all of human history now rests in our hands.

As for me, I plan on living quite dangerously (putting both butter and salt on my popcorn opening night) because we might not live to see the next day... and even if we do it might not be the type of day we were hoping for.

My only suggestion between now and May 8th is that you set aside some time to spend with your loved ones (specially the ones oblivious to the impending doom)... I know I will.

That reminds me I think I found the perfect christmas song for this situation.

I think its time to end this little party. Samuel T. Cogley is WRONG. Wrong about XI, wrong about Trek, wrong about you, and wrong about everything he believes. He and his ilk, would see trek ruined. The things they think... and their opinions... don't even get me started.
I have it on good authority from a friend of mine (lets just call him punkydrewster) that he didn't even win the internet: "He didn't even win the internet. He was totally wrong on this one."
And another highly authoritative source recently said, "That guy is a total d-bag." Yet another well respected, nameless, non-verifiable source agreed, "huge douche".
Its not just that Cogley is wrong, its that he's militantly wrong, and he's spreading his wrong ideas, and wrong opinions on star trek message boards on the internet - the place where he knows they will do the most damage. He knows that he's jeopardizing the very future of star trek, and lets just say it, the future of the United States and the world. If we let him win, we will be just as guilty for having done nothing. Join me, in starting a baseless, unnecisarily venemous, internet based war against Cogley and his allies. Join the punkydrewster coalition for better star trek opinions and help us defeat Cogley.
