Recession and Star Trek's success

I am excited about the new movie, but I'm worried about the recession. People aren't being more conservative with their money. Prices are going down, but the costs of this Star Trek picture are some of the highest in the series. The movie would have to make a lot of money to be successful. However could the recession sabotage the chances of making a lot of money from this picture?

The entertainment business doesn't seem to suffer during recessions in the same way as other industries. Same with the beverage alcohol industry. ;)

I heard this morning sales were up 7% over this time last year.

Theater-going wise; this weekend, the top 12 movies raked in 155 million, up 3 million from 07.

Meh. If things are really that bad, I just won't take the family out to eat before the movie. ;)

in '79 the economy was in a recession and TMP did very well..(and it was the most expensive Star Trek film ever released if you convert it's budget in 2008 dollars 46 million in 1979 dollars = 137 million in 2008 dollars)..TGT will be glad to share that little item...

Movies were a big deal during the Depression. Escapism will always sell.

Back then you couldn't watch films from the comfort of your own home, or buy your own copy to watch as much as you want 4 months later.

Great point! Not to mention there was no rental services like Netflix back then where for the price of two movie tickets you can get a months worth of movies delivered to your door!
